Farm Service Agency (FSA) is celebrating Native American Heritage Month Jennifer Perez (Fort Belknap Assiniboine/Nakoda Tribe, Montana) works for the USDA Farm Service Agency, National Tribal Liaison/Outreach Specialist. Jennifer Perez, in her role as tribal liaison, helps guide USDA Farm Service Agency’s government-to-government relationship with Tribes Nations. FSA aids American agricultural producers with federal farm ranch and conservation programs through 2,300 USDA service centers nationwide. With 14 years at FSA, Jennifer joined the national outreach office in 2021 after 11 years as a public affairs/outreach specialist and tribal liaison in Montana. “I love my job and cherish the opportunity to assist USDA with tribal relation efforts nationwide. Farm Loan Manager Michelle Shilling embarked on her journey with the Farm Service Agency seven years ago, starting as a dedicated Farm Loan Program Technician. Her commitment to the agriculture industry runs deep, reflecting a genuine passion for supporting producers in their endeavors. Throughout her career, Ms. Shilling has taken on the vital role of training newly hired employees, mentoring them to become effective loan officers or analysts. Her approach to training is hands-on and supportive, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of agricultural loans. She has a remarkable ability to consistently rise to the occasion, providing assistance wherever necessary to ensure that producers receive the highest level of service. In addition to managing loan services, Michelle plays a crucial role in administering disaster program payments, particularly during periods of high demand. Her willingness to step in and provide additional support during challenging times underscores her dedication to the producers she serves. Known for her strong work ethic, Michelle cultivates meaningful relationships within her office. She understands that a collaborative and efficient work environment is essential for success, and she fosters a sense of teamwork among her colleagues. Recently, Michelle had a poignant encounter with a producer who shared the impact of his family's reputation on his opportunities. He expressed, "No one ever gave him a chance because of his dad’s, brother’s, and uncle’s reputation," revealing the barriers he faced when considering applying for a loan. This deeply resonated with Michelle, fueling her belief in the importance of providing opportunities for all producers, regardless of their backgrounds. With her unwavering passion and determination, Michelle Shilling is dedicated to delivering exceptional services that empower producers to thrive in the agricultural landscape. Her contributions not only enhance the operations of the Farm Service Agency but also strengthen the fabric of the agriculture community, marking her as an invaluable asset in this vital industry.

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with Farm Service Agency (FSA) Brandi Kirkland is proud of her Choctaw Heritage. She has been with FSA for 24.5 years and has worked on both the Farm Program and Farm Loan sides. She has been involved with the local community as the leader of the Blazin Saddles 4H Club. Also she enjoys teaching horsemanship and participating in rodeos at a professional level and other equestrian competition events.

USDA Invests $9 Million in 10 Organizations Nationwide to Support Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production USDA is investing nearly $9 million in funding to local organizations to provide outreach, education and technical assistance to urban agricultural producers in ten U.S. cities. FSA is partnering with To Improve Mississippi Economics (T.I.M.E.) to administer an urban farm outreach program offering subawards to community groups that work with producers in cities where FSA has established Urban County Committees. A Surprise Twist on Employee Appreciation Day Julia Wickard, the State Director of USDA FSA in Indiana, has always valued and recognized her employees’ efforts. Her team, in turn, wanted to show their appreciation for her exceptional leadership. During her annual tradition of taking employees to the Indiana State Fair on August 13th, Wickard was unexpectedly honored with an FSA Administrator award. Approximately 300 Indiana FSA employees had secretly nominated Wickard for the award, recognizing her exceptional leadership and dedication. FSA Administrator Zach Ducheneaux joined the event via teleconference to present the award and commend Wickard’s 11-year tenure. “The work you have done as the SED for 11 years in Indiana will outlast you and will transcend your time there,” Ducheneaux said. “You’re leaving an impact on producers and the FSA in Indiana that’s going to stand the test of time, and I truly appreciate the work you’ve done."
