This October (11-13), The Battle of the Wines returns to France for a historic second edition, held this year in Chinon. We are extremely proud to see our #RAMNISTA , the iconic #Xinomavro from our Ktima (estate) in #Naoussa , taking part at this one-of-a kind competition. Our wine was nominated by Yiannis Kaimenakis, a passionate wine sommelier, owner of #PALEO Wine Store in Pireaus. We were extremely lucky to come across this majestic white wolf on our last visit at ARCTUROS Wolf & Lynx Conservation Area at Agrapidies in Florina. It was in 1992 when Yiannis Boutaris, the maverick Greek winemaker and KIR-YIANNI founder, initiated "ARCTUROS", a non-profit environmental NGO based in the region of Florina (20 km from our Estate in Amyndeon), Northern Greece. The need to stop the captivation of bears (the phenomenon of "dancing bears" was common back then) and of wolves was the initial driving force behind it all. At the same time, it was a most eloquent "statement" of (Kir-) Yiannis Boutaris' family philosophy of daring ingenuity and mindful holistic way of perception, thinking and (re)action. Even more so, at times when the term "sustainability" had neither substance nor punch to the most. Today, ARCTUROS is one of the most renowned and respected environmental NGOs in Greece and abroad with major work done and more to follow. Starting from bears and wolves, it has succeeded in including a total of 9 species under protection status; furthermore, a complete action framework has been formed under the umbrella of ARCTUROS. The goal remains solid: to protect the wildlife fauna, its natural habitat and the biodiversity, and to promote the harmonious co-existence of man and wildlife. The baskets were standing out from far at the breathtaking mountainous surroundings of Samaropetra, our vineyard in Amyndeon. "It is Tarsanas" said Stellios Boutaris . Indeed, the team had just finished harvesting the Assyrtikos from the small block dedicated to our Tarsanas wine, almost at the edge of the slope.
