Airbus’ ZEROe project is exploring different aircraft concepts which are all powered by hydrogen, promising a highly efficient, low carbon-emission future for aviation. How do you efficiently refuel an aeroplane with liquid hydrogen, which requires special expertise and technologies for safe handling? Enter ArianeGroup, with nearly half a century of unparalleled expertise in storing, testing and managing liquid hydrogen.

#ArianeGroup’s expertise rests on more than 40 years of experience in the development of launchers and propulsion systems. We are designing, producing and will provide operation support of the liquid hydrogen fuelling system necessary for the ZEROe plane. The Tank Centre at our Bremen site has already delivered a hydrogen tank demonstrator test bed for the project.

We also worked with Safran, again in partnership with Airbus, on the HyPERION research project which evaluated safe, efficient technical solutions for hydrogen propulsion for commercial aviation.

We’ve got two exciting and inspiring days ahead of us!

The annual European Space Conference, held in Brussels on 23 and 24 January, brings representatives from Europe’s #SpaceIndustry together to consider the hot topics around Europe’s future in space.

The first day will start on a high note with a discussion with ArianeGroup CEO Martin Sion on “Space Economic Security: A strategic approach to non-dependence and autonomy” at 9:45 a.m.

In the afternoon, Cécilia Matissart, ArianeGroup’s Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, will take part in a debate about “The Future of European Space Exploration: Geopolitical and socioeconomic perspectives of European Human Space Flight and Robotic exploration” at 5 p.m.

Steven Rutgers, Senior Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer at ARIANESPACE will be in the panel session “Defining the European approach to Secure and Autonomous Connectivity from Space” at 3 p.m.

The second day will kick off with a panel on “EU Space Programme: from achievements to future ambitions” with Stéphane Israël, CEO of Arianespace, followed by a panel with Yohann Leroy, CEO of MaiaSpace on “Ensuring the development of a European ecosystem for autonomous and strategic access to space”.

What do a speck of dust and a bullet have in common? At -180°C, both can cause equal damage to the delicate fuel tank of a launcher. ⚠

Frozen debris is a real threat to the integrity of the tank in space, which turns cleanliness into a top priority – and an opportunity for greater sustainability.

Traditionally, harsh chemicals were the go-to for achieving space-standard cleanliness. However, at our #SpaceExcellenceCentre in Bremen, our #SpaceEnablers have discovered environmentally friendly ways to ensure that both the inside and outside of the tanks are spotless.

Inside the tanks, a mild cleaning formula is used. "It is similar to washing-up liquid and can easily be disposed of in the sewage system," explains Jens Lassmann, ArianeGroup Site Manager in Bremen.

On the exterior, we use a laser to remove an atomic layer, effectively demolishing dirt and oxides.

Jens Lassmann adds: "These processes have many advantages. They are much cheaper than chemicals, much less dangerous for the workers, and they protect the environment. It's a testament to how small steps can change the #SpaceIndustry". 🚀

How do you ensure a steady fuel supply in zero gravity? Easy, with the right people and if you know what kind of natural forces you have, and don’t have in space says the #SpaceEnablers responsible for fuel tank production at our #SpaceExcellenceCenter in Bremen.

Customers all over the world trust our world-leading, space-qualified fuel tank portfolio. Our fuel tanks come in various sizes, ranging from 58 to 2100 litres, ready to power all kinds of missions – from small satellites to prestigious deep space probes – as standard configurations or as exclusive tailored solutions.

Two methods supply free-floating propellant for space manoeuvres. "In one design, veins run from the bottom to the top of each tank. Adhesion attracts the propellant, which is then transported to the propellant management device near the outlet by capillary action," explains Tom Schubert, Head of Surface Treatment and Test at #ArianeGroup. This system, known for its reliability and durability, is often chosen for long missions such as European Space Agency - ESA's JUICE mission to Jupiter.

For shorter missions, bladder tanks are an ideal choice. Here, the propellant is stored in a flexible balloon surrounded by helium gas in the metal fuel tank. The compressed gas squeezes the balloon, pushing the fuel in a steady stream toward the outlet."

While the tightness of this version might decrease over time, this tank is simpler in design and the shift of the centre of gravity as the fuel is used up is minimal – less than three millimetres when the balloon is fully deflated. “This preferable if you want to fly precisely – that's why we use it in the #Ariane5 and #VEGA C", says Tom Schubert.
