We've teamed up with Mayo County Council to deliver a Free online course to encourage more women in County Mayo to get involved in Politics. In 100 years- only 12 women have ever been elected to Mayo County Council! There are only 3 female councillors out of 30 after this year's Local Elections. Find out more about how politics is organised in Ireland and how Mayo County Council works with my colleague Dr Michelle Maher . Beginning this Thursday 7th November and finishing Thursday, 14th November, a free online (Zoom) course entitled ‘An Introduction to Politics’ aims to demystify politics for women and encourage them to engage in electoral politics. The free online classes are for women who wants to start to build up a bit of knowledge about politics, the functions of Mayo County Council and the day-to-day job of a county councillor. There will be two classes on each of the Thursdays, providing a choice of a morning class starting at 10am until 11:30am or an evening class starting at 8:00pm until 9:30pm. There are two ways to register. The stunning county of #Donegal is the focus of episode four of Moving West. Mary Kennedy traverses the county visiting Buncrana, Letterkenny, Fanad Head and Ardara. Nestled in the beautiful scenic landscape of south west Donegal is the town of Ardara, home of the Sliabh Liag Distillers . Owners James and Moira Doherty moved here in 2014 to fulfil their dream of owning a distillery. James was born in England but his mother hails from Kilcar where she left in the 1960's. Although his dad was born in England his parents were from nearby Carrick. Moira is from much further afield having been born in Zimbabwe. So far, they have built the Ardara Distillery and established The Silkie Irish Whiskey and An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin on four continents. Teresa and Noel Mullaney moved to Donegal from Monaghan. Teresa’s advice to anybody thinking of moving to Donegal is to give it a go, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by becoming immersed in the community and the people.” Adventurer and professional rock climber Iain Miller moved from Scotland to western Donegal in what he describes as a very easy move. He says he fitted in nicely as he was doing something that no one else did in the area and it was a minor but unusual talking point. Iain has climbed over 60 previously unclimbed sea stacks in Donegal including Tormore Island, Ireland's highest sea stack. As kids, Kevin Sexton ’s parents moved the whole family from New York (Long Island) to settle in Inishowen in the late sixties. His father was a New Yorker and his mother grew up in Donegal. Kevin stayed in Inishowen until he left for work after college because opportunities were all in the large centres. In March 2021 Kevin and his partner made the decision to move to Malin on a permanent basis. He leads ALPHA Innovation EU which is behind a significant innovation-enabling campus being developed in Letterkenny town centre. We are pleased to announce that the WDC and the Advancing Innovation in Manufacturing (AIM) Centre in Sligo have secured funding to participate in the ASTRIC Project (Attract Skills and Talent through Regional Innovation Capacity insights). Supported by the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic programme, this European initiative aims to enhance regional innovation and attract skilled talent. The project involves collaboration with Sweden's Region Västerbotten and Finland's Savonia University of Applied Sciences . The ASTRIC Project will utilise the METRIC tool to analyse our region's innovation capacity. This will help identify strengths and areas for improvement, enabling targeted strategies to attract and retain skilled workers essential for sustainable development and economic growth. This initiative aligns with WDC's mission to leverage regional strengths and address key challenges, particularly in preparing for a green and just transition. By participating in ASTRIC, we aim to ensure our region remains at the forefront of innovation and talent attraction.
