Fantastic news today that our portfolio company Clean Food Group , the pioneering UK-based bio-tech business has entered into a strategic partnership with leading cosmetics product development and manufacturer, THG LABS. The two companies will work together to create revolutionary new raw materials, starting with a low impact, high-performance oil, for use in beauty and personal care products. The collaboration will leverage the expertise of THG LABS Innovation and Research and Development teams alongside Clean Food Group’s industry-leading technology in delivering sustainable oils and fats solutions to the world's food and cosmetics manufacturers. Clean Food Group’s proprietary technology platform uses proven, scalable non-GMO yeast strains and fermentation technology and harnesses bread waste as its food source, to deliver sustainable alternatives to traditional oil and fat ingredients. We are delighted to announce that our portfolio company Galy has closed an oversubscribed $33 million Series B financing round. Founded in 2019 with a mission to find ethical and sustainable agricultural solutions, “GALY Cotton” is the company’s first product targeting conventional cotton practices. “GALY Cotton” is a new material that fully replicates traditional cotton in quality, retaining its exact attributes because it originates from an actual plant, all while offering ESG benefits, customizable quality and a clear roadmap to reach cost parity The funds from the round will primarily fuel the expansion of GALY’s research and development on its innovative cellular agriculture platform and its flagship product, “GALY Cotton,” which uses 99% less water and 97% less land than traditional cotton while emitting 77% less CO2, as it advances towards pre-industrial quality and scale. GALY has also secured millions of dollars in proof-of-concept agreements with top industry players and a 10-year, $50 million offtake agreement with Suzuran Medical, a Japanese medical supplies manufacturer, for the sourcing of "GALY Cotton.” Today's announcement is another one of the Agronomics portfolio company which has continued to demonstrate notable progress this quarter, achieving multiple new financings. Our co-founder Anthony Chow, CFA spoke with Sifted about the current attitudes towards the cellular agriculture industry by Governments across Europe: “There's this perverse situation where Europe is so much more forward-thinking than most of the US when it comes to climate change and challenges around sustainability. The food system is one of the biggest burdens from greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation — but Europe is completely anti-application of biotechnology to food production. “There is proof that you can get products approved in Singapore and in the US — there is no evidence that you can in Europe. Our founder Jim Mellon spoke to the Sunday Times to discuss how, despite a difficult fundraising environment, many leading companies across the cellular agriculture industry are closing successful funding rounds: "London-listed Agronomics, an investment company specialising in “cellular agriculture”, has participated in six of the seven largest financings in the sector in the past year. “People are still raising money, if you’ve got a good enough story,” Jim Mellon said. Mellon pointed to Mosa Meat, a Dutch company set up by the industry’s founding father, Mark Post, who created the first lab-grown burger in 2013. It raised €40 million (£34 million) in April. Prolific Machines, a California start-up pioneering a technology that uses light to stimulate cell growth, raised $55 million in June. Agronomics’ portfolio of stakes in private companies should give it a market value of 18p per share, but that price has plunged to 5.5p; its shares stood at 28p three years ago. “The discount is absolutely vast. I can’t explain it,” Mellon said. “Having been around for a very long time in this business, I think that ultimately — as there are exits and companies are acquired for their intellectual property and so forth — the cycle will turn again.”

A great piece in City AM today on the back of Meatly 's historic achievement of receiving regulatory approval to sell its cultivated chicken for pet food in the UK. The piece looks at the growing role of investment companies like Agronomics in supporting private companies or smaller quoted companies to help finance innovation and drive growth. Speaking to City AM, Co-founder of Agronomics, Anthony Chow, CFA , said: "Innovation requires capital and one of the major conduits of capital to entrepreneurs in the UK is investment companies like Agronomics. "This model isn’t conventional in the US, but in the UK, it provides a mechanism by which non-institutional investors can gain exposure to industries of the future and invest in several industry-leading companies."
