""Aylin*, what do you want to be when you grow up?"" her teacher asked, and with a twinkle in her eye, she said, ""I want to be a doctor!"" Life wasn't easy for Aylin and her family. Their tiny home had little space and fewer resources. A flickering light bulb hung above. They cooked on a small gas stove in the corner, with no separate kitchen. Without a bathroom, they had to use a public toilet that was far away, making daily life challenging. The streets outside were bustling with laughter and shouting, but the odour of garbage lingered in the air. Aylin admired her mother, who worked tirelessly as a domestic worker to support them. Our CCC enrolled Aylin's mother into Vision Rescue’s three-month Beautician & Haircare Course. She was a quick learner and cleared the assessment with flying colours, and quickly began to take orders in her neighbourhood at home. In just three months, we witnessed Aylin's mother transform from a quiet, shy woman with little confidence and hope for the future into an outspoken lady. As her mother grew more confident, Aylin began to blossom too. She started participating more in class and made new friends. Aylin's grades also improved. One child's success created opportunities for the entire family. ""Can life really change for a family like ours?"" This was the question Zuhera* often asked herself, day after day. Life was tough - her husband's income as a driver barely covered their expenses, so she worked as a domestic worker, too. Even then, they constantly relied on her mother for support for a long time. Zuhera's addiction to tobacco only made things worse, and she felt trapped in the cycle. Waqas*, their 4-year-old son, was shy and reserved, rarely talking or playing with others. In 2023, he was enrolled in Nursery at BLC. Soon, he started coming home with a sparkle in his eyes, excited to share what he learned at school. He was no longer the quiet boy in the corner; Waqas became curious, eager, and more confident. Zuhera, who struggled with tobacco addiction, has significantly reduced her consumption with constant motivation from our CCC. She even completed the vocational Mehandi course, giving her a new way to earn extra income. ""Thanks to the support we received, we are not where we were,"" she says. ""I want to be a teacher when I grow up,"" says Tanu*, a 6-year-old girl who attends the Senior KG at BLC. Tanu lives with her family in an overcrowded slum community. Their small rented home, just one room, has a kachha floor and lacks a proper bathroom or toilet. Her father works as a daily wage laborer, while her mother is a housewife. The family's economic struggles weigh heavily on them. Despite these challenges, Tanu brings joy to her family with her bright smile and curious spirit. Tanu's journey took a turn when her family encountered a Vision Rescue intern during an outreach program. In 2022, Tanu was enrolled in Nursery at BLC, stepping into a new world where learning and laughter filled the air. At BLC, she received a school kit filled with necessities she had never dreamed of – a lunch box, bag, sandals, uniform, and even a raincoat. Tanu’s mother attended FGMs, where she learned about various topics, from good parenting to awareness of government schemes for education. These meetings empowered her to make informed decisions about her children’s education and well-being. We are grateful to you, dear donors. Yaafis* was identified as a Moderately Acute Malnourished (MAM) child. His frail body told the story of his family's daily challenges. His mother shares her burden: ""I work hard every day, but it’s never enough."" She feels sad for her daughter, who had to drop out of school to care for her younger siblings. ""But what can I do? If my husband and I don’t work, feeding all seven children will be even harder. I’m just thankful we heard about Vision Rescue,” she adds. ""At least two of my children are now enrolled in BLC."" The family, who recently migrated from Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai, faced many hardships. But Vision Rescue’s intervention brought hope. In 2022, Yaafis was enrolled in BLC. His mother admits, ""We didn’t even know about Yaafis’s health condition until Vision Rescue's medical team recognized and helped us address it."" Yaafis is starting to show signs of improvement through regular health check-ups and access to nutritious meals at BLC. Yaafis’s teacher shares, ""When he started at BLC, he was very quiet and didn’t engage much in class. But once he received his school kit, he became more involved and started enjoying his time at school."" Nabeel*, just four years old, lives with his family in a small 100 sq ft home in one of Mumbai’s poorest slum areas. His father is a driver who earns Rs. 8,000/—a month, barely enough to meet the needs of their seven-member family. On top of the financial strain, Nabeel’s father struggles with alcohol addiction, which further drains their limited resources. Life is challenging for Nabeel’s mother. She works tirelessly to ensure her children have what little they can, constantly worrying about meeting their basic needs. “When we couldn’t even afford basic necessities,” she shares, her voice heavy with sadness, “how could we think of sending Nabeel to school?” But despite this seemingly hopeless situation, a glimmer of hope appeared. In June 2024, Nabeel was enrolled in our BLC program. For a family struggling to make ends meet, it was a lifeline. Nabeel now receives free education, nutritious meals, health checkups, and school supplies—essentials they could never afford. The little boy who once had no dreams now speaks of becoming a doctor.
