🏀 Building for India’s Sports and Fitness Revolution.

Abhishek Ganguly, Co-founder & CEO of Agilitas, Mohit Kumar, Founder of Ultrahuman and Runnr, and Naresh Krishnaswamy, CEO of Curefit - House of Cult, discussed the "why now" for the sector at our Move-a-Thon mixer last week with Chandrasekhar Venugopal (CV).

👟 Footwear: Government support through BIS, PLI Schemes, and ‘Make in India’ has created a significant “Why now,” potentially disrupting the supply landscape. Founders can use this opportunity to build customer-backwards – wider feet for India, women and kid solutions, and price points innovation. However, challenges exist across the entire value chain, from sourcing/manufacturing (lack of raw materials and quality production capability) to distribution (overdependence on Marketplaces). India also lacks talent (product design) and experience in building home-grown aspirational brands.

👕 Apparel and Lifestyle: India’s needs are different – innovations are key – including those in fabric (cotton feel, bamboo, breathable), fit (mix of lounge-wear and active-wear), and silhouette. Several categories like movement-friendly innerwear and swimwear for Indian women still need 101 problem-solving.

⌚ Wearables and Tracking: While the primary focus has traditionally been on basic metrics like step tracking, consumers are turning their attention to more advanced metrics. There is an increasing interest in tracking sleep, heart rate variability (HRV), etc. As the nation gets sophisticated in its fitness, it will upgrade to devices of better quality/brands – and deeper, more personalized features.

🏋️‍♀️ Facilities: Supply (of facilities and infra) will lead to demand, and not the other way around. Setting up facilities is capital-intensive with long payback windows. Choosing the right sport, location, maximizing utilization, and upselling will be key to running a profitable business. There may be white spaces like that in swimming - a large untrained population is starting to learn and rely on the same for daily fitness.

Key Recommendation for founders:

🏃‍♂️ Abhishek: Absolute focus on creating uniqueness drives growth, especially in fashion and sports where India lacks historical strength.
🥇 Naresh: For founders in fitness and sports, hire only those who share your deep passion for the field, as it’s critical for authentic and effective business growth.
📈 Mohit: Ensure your employees use your product daily to gain insights and stay ahead of market trends, making internal feedback your first signal for product iterations. This will help you get closer to PMF.
