National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIF) is a collaborative investment platform for international and Indian investors, anchored by the Government of India. NIIF invests across asset classes such as infrastructure, private equity and other diversified sectors in India, with the objective to generate attractive risk-adjusted returns for its investors.

NIIF thinks long-term, believes in generating returns through efficiently operating its investments across economic cycles, and is committed to sustainable investing principles.

NIIF manages about USD 5 billion of equity capital commitments across its four funds - Master Fund, Private Markets Fund, Strategic Opportunities Fund and India-Japan Fund, each with its distinct investment strategy. NIIF Master Fund primarily invests in operating assets in core infrastructure sectors such as transportation and energy. NIIF Private Markets Fund invests in funds managed by best-in-class fund managers focused on some of the most dynamic sectors in India such as climate infrastructure, middle-income & affordable housing, digital consumer platforms and other allied sectors. NIIF Strategic Opportunities Fund is a Private Equity fund which aims to build scalable businesses across a range of opportunity long but capital short sectors. The India-Japan Fund (IJF) is NIIF’s first bilateral fund and invests in environment preservation in India. IJF also seeks to enable opportunities for collaboration between Indian and Japanese companies in India.

Over the last few years, NIIF has been putting together the Monthly Economic Report on India (MERI). 

NIIF's MERI reviews a large number of long-term datasets on macro, markets, investments, and infrastructure. A succinct summary at the beginning captures key trends taking shape in India's macroeconomy. 

On the day of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting, we present the MERI for March 2024 which notes that:

💠The Indian economy is nearing its pre-pandemic trend, supported by the 8%+ growth in Q3FY24, and is expected to close the gap by the end of CY2024. Fixed capital formation and private consumption are already above pre-pandemic trends. 
💠High frequency indicators reflect robust growth in e-way bills, air travel, and demand for two-wheelers, and bank credit recorded, even after adjusting for a longer February. 
💠India’s composite PMI of 60.6 remains stellar. 
💠There are early signs of moderation – yoy growth in overall core infrastructure (despite a strong coal and steel production) and goods trade in Jan, energy demand, power generation, and ports cargo traffic in Feb are muted. 
💠Foreign direct investments record a net outflow in Dec. 
💠Cumulative net foreign portfolio investments with a surge in debt inflows in FYTD2024 (up to Feb) are at a decadal high causing Indian yields to moderate. 
💠Tighter liquidity conditions continue to keep short-term rates up, causing an inverted yield curve (10-year over 1-year)

Here are a few stories of how women are breaking barriers within the NIIF family:

🚒 When you think of a firefighter, you probably imagine a man. This perception exists because of the overwhelming male dominance in the field, both in India and globally. Disha Naik shatters this stereotype. She works as a firewoman at NIIF platform company GMR Goa International Airport, serving as a role model for a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

🚌 Women intercity bus drivers are rare. They often face resistance from male counterparts, passengers, and sometimes even family. Sumitra, an Intercity Coach Captain, is among a cohort of women pioneering change at GreenCell Mobility . Her profession surprises many, but her skill and confidence quickly turn surprise into respect. GreenCell Mobility's commitment to rigorous training and their aim to increase gender diversity in their crew showcases a forward-thinking approach. With a 12 member women crew already in place, they're driving towards a more inclusive future.

🔬 Pratima Baske, a Meat Technician at Licious, represents another inspiring story. Showcasing a high skill level, meat technicians master clean and precise cuts. Licious's commitment to diversity and inclusion shines through their support for women like Pratima in unconventional roles, with 400+ women engaged in various functions.

Their journeys teach us that every woman can redefine the future, break barriers and set new standards for what is possible. This is the inspiration for Ekika, NIIF’s very own women’s network. ‘Ekika’ is a Sanskrit word and it means ‘One Woman’. Our goal at Ekika is to foster an environment where every woman feels empowered to become an 'Ekika' in her chosen field.

A special shoutout to our platform companies like Ayana Renewable Power and Athaang Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, launching projects to promote job prospects, uplift vulnerable communities, and champion gender equality. Ayana’s “Skill Development Project for Grid Connected Solar Power Sector” has provided free training to 200+ youths, including 80+ women, equipping them with essential skills for the future. Similarly, Athaang’s Devanahalli project promotes gender diversity and empowerment with an all women-led toll shift!
