The recent surge in gas prices (much higher than oil prices) highlights the risks in investing behind a business model heavily dependent on global commodity prices.

Over the past couple of years, as gas prices cratered globally due to a supply glut and domestic gas production ramped up, there were several investment ideas doing the rounds based on a secular growth in gas consumption. The recent disproportionate increase in gas prices as compared to even crude oil prices, if sustained, could put a halt to this structural trend. This once again highlights the risk in investing behind business models that are heavily dependent on global commodity prices, which in turn are notoriously difficult to forecast.

The sharp erosion in shareholder value seen in Zee Enterprises over the last three years is a stark reminder of the importance of backing the right promoter groups. This goes beyond their competence in running the business, and is more related to integrity and incentives being aligned with minority shareholders. The recent controversy between the management and large financial investors in the company has garnered a lot of attention and can tempt many as a special situations play. 

However, the developments over the weekend are a strong reminder to us of a quote from Professor Elroy Dimpson from the London Business School - “Risk means more things can happen than will happen.” Given the nascent stage of shareholder activism in India, asymmetric information around developments in the boardroom as well as the risk of a prolonged legal tussle, this is an easy pass for White Whale PMS given our risk framework.
