Today's spotlight is on our incredible CEO and Co-founder, Julio Martínez!

He describes himself in just a few words: 🤵 Husband, 👨👧👦 3x Father, 🚀 CEO and Founder, and living life as a stoic, minimalist, and proud vegetarian 🥦.

Despite an initial dream of becoming a paella cook, destiny had other plans, leading Julio on a 20-year adventure filled with diverse experiences in finance, technology, and entrepreneurship. He spent time in investment banking in NYC, Sao Paulo, Zurich, and London and launched four fintech products to market.

Today, he stands as the co-founder and CEO of Abacum, an FP&A platform designed to automate, analyze, and forecast for strategic impact. Abacum is the brainchild born from Julio Martínez and Jorge Lluch’s own struggles in the finance world.

Beyond the boardroom, Julio is a family man at heart, and he lives in the vibrant city of New York with his amazing wife and three high-energy children.

A lover of stoicism, particularly that of Epictetus, Julio embraces daily practices such as Vipassana meditation and journaling to clear his thoughts and make better decisions.

As we embrace the start of the new year, let's reflect on the beginnings that shaped our journey. 🛣️

Cast your mind back to 2020 – the year when Zoom calls became our social hub, and the world collectively embraced sweatpants as the ultimate fashion statement. 🦠

Amidst this chaos, Julio Martínez and Jorge Lluch founded Abacum. Many might think that this was the absolute worst time to start a business; however, Julio and Jorge believed it was a winning idea, irrespective of the global pandemic. 

Both possessing a robust background in Finance, they recognized a pressing need in the market for a solution to handle FP&A processes more efficiently. Thus our mission was born: To make Finance the hero of every organization! 😎 

The company started as a fully remote entity with just a few employees but soon started growing and bringing value to the market, securing a seed funding of $7 million in April 2021, followed by a $25 million Series A round in November 2021.

Fast forward almost four years, Abacum now boasts a team of more than 90 employees worldwide, serving clients across the globe. But the story continues, and we're thrilled to share the next chapter of success with you.

Budgets aren't just about numbers.

They're about translating decisions into execution.

Try this to redefine your budgeting strategies:

1. Break the illusion of control.

Don’t rely on guesswork and projections that are too far ahead. This creates a false sense of control. It's more productive to focus on actual business progress rather than relying on 12-month forecasts.

2. Outdated already. 

I see budgets often become outdated even before the fiscal year starts. That’s because they depend on past data, ignoring current industry dynamics or market trends. The tech industry moves fast, making this approach dangerous.

3. Remove the low-value process.

The FP&A budgeting process is time-consuming and has no actionable value. Instead, frequent, accurate forecasting and market analysis can offer more timely insights. Aim for that.

4. Don’t set and forget.

Annual budgets are treated as unchangeable documents, despite constantly evolving business and market conditions. This rigidity can hinder the ability to seize new opportunities and align budget targets with business objectives.

Takeaway:

Get real-time data updates, share insights into trends and be ready for uncertainty with live rolling forecasting. The real challenge for finance is to cut the noise out of the data and get useful insights.
