Worth watching: This quarter’s MSCI Carbon Markets “Voluntary Carbon Market in Review” webinar last week, looked at developments in the voluntary carbon market in Q3 2024 and was informative as always! MSCI presented a wealth of data on #CarbonMarkets including information on project prices, volumes, key policy developments and market integrity. Three main takeaways: 1️⃣ We are seeing a visible move towards higher-integrity projects, across both demand and supply metrics. On the supply side, we see a shift away from carbon reduction projects towards higher-quality carbon removal projects, while on the demand side, the percentage of retired credits by integrity rating is growing for top-quality categories and decreasing for lower quartile projects (see chart below for more detail). 2️⃣ Hopes for an agreement on finalising Article 6 at COP29 have improved: the UN body in charge of the Paris Agreement’s Crediting Mechanism adopted methodological requirements, and the US and EU negotiators expressed intentions to reach a consensus. 3️⃣ The number of companies with an SBTI target continued to grow this quarter, with 1,169 new or enhanced commitments in Q3, resulting in a >100% year-on-year growth. 🌏 Back to a really important topic: more data showing that the VCM is a tool that is used in addition to (and NOT instead of) decarbonization! Further analysis posted a couple of weeks ago by MSCI Carbon Markets contradicts the popular notion that companies buying and retiring carbon credits commit fewer resources to reducing their own emissions. The findings refute the ‘license to pollute’ hypothesis and suggest that the voluntary purchase of carbon credits provides companies an incentive to accelerate their emission reductions. 🔗 Download the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dyjjC9tS The study was based on 624 companies that used at least 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent of carbon credits (material users) and 2,041 non-users. Here are 3 key takeaways: 1️⃣ Material users (ie. buyers) of credits reduced their absolute (Scope 1 and 2) emissions at a rate more than twice as fast as non-users over the five years ending in 2022 (at a rate of 3.6% p.a. vs. 1.5%). Further, 75% of material users reduced their emissions in absolute terms over the same period, compared with 60% of non-users. 2️⃣ Material users of carbon credits were more likely to have set a climate target than non-users (92% vs. 52%), and those targets were more likely to meet commonly accepted credibility criteria. 3️⃣ Material carbon-credit users generated a greater share of revenue from low-carbon activities than non-users across most sectors. #carbonmarkets BlueLayer #carboncredits
