One of the challenges for any company is transferring data between trading partners. In the seafood world that is especially complex because of the diversity of product and the length of the supply chains. For instance a Patagonian Toothfish will likely become a Chilean Sea Bass by the time it hits your table. Half the Patagonia Toothfish fisheries appear to be well managed and have gotten MSC certification. The other half have not. Without a traceability chain there is no way of knowing whether your dinner is contributing to the collapse of a fishery or supporting local fisherman who are doing the right thing. The Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability has built a syntax and method for transferring data between systems. We are proud to join this movement, because we know how important it is for the seafood industry. Consumers love seafood, but they want to know it is harvested in a sustainable fashion and that it is not coming from slave ships or outlaw countries. The National Aquaculture Development Plan is now open for public comment. This is the first time if 40 years(!) that the US has developed a national plan to support aquaculture. I'm always a little skeptical of government help, but the aquaculture industry is hampered by a number of well meaning regulations that make it expensive to operate. Hopefully this will be a first step towards making it easier for the US to grow a larger share of our seafood.
