🗞 Hot off the press: the 2024 ENISA Threat Landscape got published today. The results are not much different from the Verizon Data Breach report we discussed earlier, but these numbers caught our eye: 🎯 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝟭𝟵%) 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁, followed by companies in Transportation (11%) and Finance (9%). 🖥 In the 19754 new vulnerabilities (CVEs) reported over the last 12 months, 𝟯𝟯% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 (𝗖𝗪𝗘𝘀) 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗤𝗟 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 📉 Over the 12 months ending June 2024, the number of 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗺𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱 (after an increase the year before). The manufacturing sector is the most frequently targeted by ransomware attacks. 📈 On the other hand, the number of 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘂𝗽𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱, unfortunately. https://lnkd.in/daxaExM3

Key takeaways from the 2024 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (released just before summer), a highly relevant report based on the analysis of +/- 30K incidents and +/- 10K data breaches: 👨💼 More than 𝘁𝘄𝗼-𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 (𝟲𝟴%) 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Mostly via stolen or brute-forced credentials (nearly 40%), followed by phishing (16%). This highlights the importance of 2FA. 🕳 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (in Web applications) as an “entry point” currently accounts for 15% of data breaches and 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿. ⛓ 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀, up from 4% in 2021 (hence the importance of solid supply chain risk management). 🎯 𝗗𝗗𝗼𝗦 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿, accounting for more than 50% of total security incidents (of which data breaches are only a part). ⏱ 𝗔𝘁 𝟯𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝟴𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. https://lnkd.in/g3sN4ss7
