We are excited to announce our investment into Kinto, the safe, decentralized, and KYC-compliant Ethereum L2!

The round was led by Kyber Capital Crypto, Spartan Group and Parafi, with Robot Ventures, SkyBridge Capital, and others participating. 

Blockchain, with its open and permissionless nature, has the potential to improve access to financial services across the globe. Builders can now create more efficient services that are non-custodial, decentralized, and free of rent-seeking middlemen.

However, all these improvements are overshadowed by scams, rug pulls, and smart contract hacks. More than $30B was lost in 2022 alone.

Kinto is the first blockchain network built to address all these problems on the chain level to support a new wave of secure financial applications.

President Biden recently issued an AI Executive Order to ensure safe, secure, and trustworthy use of artificial intelligence.

We believe that the convergence of blockchain and AI will help achieve these goals, and that this intersection of tech will accelerate quickly. 

Here's why.

Blockchain can help protect users from fraud and deception caused by AI

One of the key actions of the EO is to "protect Americans from AI-enabled fraud and deception by establishing standards for detecting AI-generated content and authenticating official content."

Blockchain can help identify images, videos, and other media as real or fake.

For example, comms that come from The White House, such as the AI Executive Order itself, can be cryptographically signed by the WH Press team and and put on the blockchain for anyone to verify.

Our  portfolio company Numbers Protocol is working on this exact problem!

Blockchain can help preserve the privacy of data used in AI models

Loads of data are needed to train LLMs and other AI models. The way this data is extracted, analyzed, and integrated must be done in a way that maintains citizens’ data privacy.

Blockchain to the rescue!

Blockchain can be used to facilitate:

-Secure identity verification and authentication
-Data encryption and decentralization
-Data anonymization
-Data ownership and consent
-Auditing and accountability
-More!

Conclusion
The EO aims to ensure secure and trustworthy use of AI.

Blockchain will play a very important role in achieving these initiatives, and we look forward to funding and supporting these projects in the near future.

Why we are bullish on Bitcoin L2s

Most of the activity around Bitcoin has been related to transfers and trading of BTC.

With Ordinals, digital artifacts/NFTs and other arbitrary data are now being stored directly on the Bitcoin blockchain.

This has opened up the ability to build and innovate on Bitcoin. Developers are now experimenting with building DeFi, NFT, and other capabilities in the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Most of this development will take place on Bitcoin Layer-2s to maximize speed and throughput, and minimize transaction costs.

Bitcoin is the OG of blockchains but it has drawbacks that limit its functionality. It's not scalable, you can't program on it, and it has limited privacy.

L2s solve these problems by batching txs, providing smart contract capabilities, and providing more privacy.

State channel solutions like Lightning Labs allow for micropayments on its L2 and has seen substantial growth.

Rollups provide smart contract capabilities and scalability by batching L2 txs into a single L1 transaction. ZK rollups also provide much-needed privacy features. 

Sidechains provide similar capabilities as rollups with their own set of validators.
