Hohonu provides precision monitoring and forecasting to help communities prepare for and respond to flooding. It uses the latest technologies in hardware, software, and data science in order to deliver reliable and accessible water level data to its customers. 

"If you can't measure it, you can't improve it." The same principles its team used in the restoration of an ancient Hawaiian fishpond in He'eia fishpond, located in Kane'ohe Bay on the island of O'ahu, can be used to help aid in humanity's fight against climate change.

Did you know that in some regions of the world, high tide flooding has increased by more than 900% in frequency over the last 50 years? 

I know this sounds unbelievable. I wish I was exaggerating, but that’s according to NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. 

In Charleston, SC—where tidal flooding occurs every four to five days—the community has experienced more flooding events in a recent 2-year period than the previous 80 combined.

This is a microcosm of what we can expect in coastal communities around the globe as the climate crisis intensifies.

We already know that:
1. Sea level rise has made naturally occurring high tides even more frequent and intense
2. Extreme weather has become more frequent, drastic, and life-threatening as a result
3. Increased hurricanes, tropical cyclones, & thunderstorms also increase the amount and severity of storm surges, flooding, mudslides, and more

Small, underserved coastal communities have historically been left in the dark to accurately determine the damage done by extreme weather and subsequent flooding. 

Enter Hohonu: an innovative Hawai’i-based company that helps these communities adapt to climate change by providing actionable data and insights to protect communities from current and future flooding.

“​​There’s been a visceral change in people’s posture in the last three to four years,” said Juan Muldoon, partner at Energize Capital, a VC company that invests in infrastructure resilience.

It’s been just a few years since The Lightsmith Group a sustainable private equity firm, raised what is believed to be the first private equity fund focused on climate resilience and adaptation: an $186 million vehicle that closed in January of 2022.

In retrospect, that fund seems to be the start of something. As interest in the adaptation space starts to coalesce, Bianca Giacobone spoke with investors and founders including Tailwind’s Katie MacDonald, Brian Glazer of Hohonu, and Rich Sorkin of Jupiter Intelligence about how they are grappling with an already changing climate.

Climate mitigation and adaptation are often treated as distinctly separate, but we believe the future is brightest when they're working together.

The past few weeks we've had the privilege of being mentioned alongside organizations we admire who are leading the charge in resilience and adaptation: Jupiter Intelligence, Floodbase, and First Street.

"Our fundamental dependence on water in a changing climate has made managing water resources—both too much and too little of it—increasingly difficult. Flood risks are the undisputed headliner here. Companies like Fathom and First Street are rolling out solutions for better flood prediction, and Floodbase and Hohonu are among those working on flood monitoring."

Our hearts go out to those who were impacted by #Hurricane #Beryl earlier this month.

In partnership with Texas Sea Grant and #AI2ES, a Hohonu sensor was installed at Six Mile Park directly before Beryl made landfall. The sensor measured a 5-foot drop in water levels as the storm approached, signifying that water was being pushed to a different area. 

Flooding often evokes images of high water, but even low water can be a sign of an impending flood event. NOAA is predicting an above-average hurricane season this year and we hope to be a small part in helping communities prepare, respond, and recover.
