Phasecraft is the quantum algorithms company. We’re building the mathematical foundations for quantum computing applications that solve real-world problems.

Our team brings together many of the world’s leading quantum scientists, including founders Toby Cubitt, Ashley Montanaro, and John Morton and quantum consultant Andrew Childs.

In 2020 we completed a record £3.7m seed round for a quantum computing company in the UK, led by VC firm LocalGlobe.

Today we took the wraps off one of our most important projects as a company so far: a suite of algorithms that makes simulating materials on quantum computers simpler and more efficient than ever before. 

One of our focuses at Phasecraft is creating algorithms to discover new materials that could lead to advances in renewable energy, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. Yet the current crop of quantum computers can’t carry out complex simulations because they’re limited by the number of operations they can reliably perform.  

Published today in Nature Communications, our algorithms combine and optimise classical mapping with quantum simulation to break down these limitations. 

The first stage performs calculations and optimisations on classical computers to produce an effective representation of the material
The second stage produces the world’s most efficient quantum circuits to simulate the material’s behaviour
The framework is encapsulated in an integrated software pipeline, drastically reducing the number of quantum gates needed to run the simulations, by a factor of more than a million in some cases

For instance: lithium copper oxide, which is used in advanced lithium-ion battery technology, can now be simulated with 410,000 gates, compared to the baseline technique of 1.5 trillion gates. 

With these algorithms, we’re one step closer to running complex material simulations on near-term quantum computers - what was once beyond reach now seems to be within striking distance. This could accelerate advancements in the development of more efficient batteries and solar cells to power the renewable energy transition. 

This work is the culmination of multiple years of research and we’re extremely proud of the team for their work achieving this. Among other applications, quantum computers will enable rapid and accurate modelling of novel materials that are vital for the clean energy revolution.

The long-term support for work on quantum hardware, algorithms and software provided by the UK's Quantum Computing Mission is essential to help the industry go beyond these early advantages. As other countries invest heavily in this area, it’s very welcome to see the UK government backing the sector with additional funding which will enable quantum computers to deliver a host of scientific and technological breakthroughs of great benefit to society.
