Blount Memorial Hospital to merge with Prisma Health by Dec. 1

Blount Memorial Hospital will merge with Prisma Health by December 1, 2024, following approvals from Blount County Commission, Maryville City Council, and Alcoa City Council. Prisma Health will invest $364 million and control the hospital's operations, retaining the right to appoint board members. A separate guidance board for the Blount Memorial Foundation will allow local municipalities to continue providing financial support for medical bills.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is set to enhance its remote access capabilities by replacing its current VPN service, BIG-IP Edge (F5), with Prisma Access. This transition, branded as GlobalProtect, will begin on August 21, 2024, and aims to improve remote connectivity, machine verification, and overall security for VUMC's information and data. The change will affect all VUMC workforce members and affiliates, marking a significant upgrade in their remote access infrastructure.

Prisma Health has been in negotiations with United Healthcare for over six months, resulting in United Healthcare being out-of-network since January 1. This change has affected nearly 60,000 patients, leading to increased out-of-pocket costs for necessary medical services. Prisma Health has successfully renewed agreements with other insurers but continues to negotiate with United Healthcare, which claims its reimbursement rates are fair. Patients have expressed concerns about the financial burden of out-of-network care.
