Electric Capital's 2023 Annual Crypto Developer Report is out, offering a wealth of insights into the current state of the crypto development landscape. Let's take a moment to go through the highlights, so you don't have to:

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞: Despite a 24% drop in the overall number of crypto developers, the most valuable segment - those with over two years of tenure who contribute the most code - continues to grow. This group has reached an all-time high, growing at a 52% annualized rate over the past five years.

𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠: Developers with more than a year in crypto, constituting 63% of all monthly active developers, have grown by 16% year-over-year.

𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬: There's been a significant 52% year-over-year decrease in newcomers, contributing to the overall reduction in developer numbers due to high churn rates.

𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 30% of developers now support more than one chain, a dramatic increase from just 3% in 2015, with those backing three or more chains reaching 17% in 2023.

𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡: Developers are increasingly choosing projects based on their potential for genuine utility, leading to varied growth across different initiatives.

𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐫𝐲𝐩𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬: 72% of developers are now located outside North America, with the US losing 14% of its developer share since 2018.
