Clinical practise

Each year more than 6700 patiens coming from all over Italy but also from several foreign countries look for consultation in one of our clinics: the headquarter in Milan is supported by other 27 clinics in Italy, where all diseases of the spine of nonsurgical interest are treated conservatively.

This study aimed to investigate the potential variance in the prevalence of early-onset scoliosis among children aged 4-7 years and analyze the influencing factors. The goal was to establish a crucial reference point for monitoring and evaluating spinal curvature development in preschoolers, ultimately to reduce the occurrence of adverse health outcomes. Monitoring spinal curvature development in preschool children can aid in the early detection and correction of scoliosis, as well as raise awareness among adolescents and parents to ensure prompt and appropriate treatment and minimize adverse health outcomes. A healthy lifestyle has an important impact on the improvement of quality of life in adolescents. As there is substantial evidence shown that meeting the recommendations outlined in the recently introduced 24-hour movement behavior (24-HMB) guidelines (physical activity, screen time, sleep) has a positive influence on QOL-related outcomes among children and adolescents, this study aimed to assess the associations between these guidelines and QOL among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The findings highlight the importance of adopting and maintaining healthy behavioral habits in order to improve QOL among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis, especially in those without back pain or with good self-image. Pulmonary function in patients with scoliosis has been a topic of concern, with some reports of markedly decreased ventilatory function leading to disability and increased mortality in patients with severe scoliosis. The purpose of this study was to report the long-term pulmonary function in patients diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis compared with an age-matched population using extended pulmonary function testing. Though no pulmonary impairment could be demonstrated 40 years after a diagnosis of IS, patients with thoracic curves had decreased pulmonary function compared to patients with TL/L curves, but all were within the normal limits. Thus, when treated as current guidelines suggest, patients with idiopathic scoliosis can expect the same long-term pulmonary function as the general population. One of the main concerns for our scoliosis patients is how to dress while wearing a brace for most of the day, and how to disguise its presence while still feeling comfortable. We’ve gathered ten tips from interviews with our young patients, who are eager to make the most of their outfits. We also asked two of our patients, Aurora and Alberto, to model for us and share a bit about their experiences. Among Alberto's tips: "I wear a lot of loose and comfortable clothing, like oversized sweatshirts, cargo pants, and baggy t-shirts. It's important to differentiate between summer and the school year. During the school year, my daily priority is simply comfort. I personally recommend choosing loose-fitting clothes made from soft fabrics that don’t cause discomfort when wearing the brace." Aurora's experience? “At first, it was really tough, but I overcame several challenges and managed to do a lot of things, like gym class, playing volleyball, and even swimming at the beach while wearing it!” As for clothing? She recommends yes to fitted dresses with round or high necklines, even short-sleeved ones. And for the perfect blazer? The goal of this study was to characterize the self-reported prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities among patients with adolescent scoliosis in the US. The prevalence of teenagers with diagnosed depression was found to be 3.9% and anxiety disorder to be 4.7%, notably higher among adolescent girls. In this national sample, over half of adolescent scoliosis patients report psychiatric comorbidity, often diagnosed years later. The most prevalent psychiatric condition is depression, anxiety, and body-image disturbances. These findings highlight the importance of awareness of the psychiatric impact of adolescent scoliosis, and importance of screening and treatment of comorbid mental health conditions.
