A couple of weeks ago, together with colleagues from the Honda Research Institute Japan Co. Ltd. , the Honda Research Institute USA, Inc. and the Honda Research Institute Europe GmbH , I had the opportunity to visit the iconic IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York following an invitation from Enrique Vargas and Sonal Venkatadri . It was a great pleasure to share advanced research activities with a focus on quantum technology. I would like to thank the colleagues from IBM very much for their tremendous hospitality, for the opportunity to learn about their exciting research activities and to gain some first-hand experience with the latest IBM Quantum System 2. We look forward to more opportunities in the future to continue this very fruitful exchange.

It was honor to give an invited seminar on Quantum Materials in the Physics Department of The University of Vienna, one of the oldest universities in Europe (established in 1365 by Duke Rudolph IV). The department is not only focused on the fundamentals of quantum physics (led by Nobel Laureate Prof. Anton Zeilinger, among other talented professors), but it also recently built one of the unique electron microscopes with 0.8A resolution for in-situ studies of the surface reactions of quantum materials and their truly intrinsic properties (led by Prof. Toma Susi).

We’re thrilled to announce that our paper on the influence of visual field size on eye-head coordination has been published in a special issue of the Journal of Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIS) commemorating “20 Years of RIEC Cooperative Research Projects in the Vision Science Lab.” The paper, titled “The Impact of Visual Field Size on Eye-Head Coordination During Cognitive Processing,” is now accessible online https://lnkd.in/ghnN5gaS . This study delves into the influence of visual cognitive processing on the coordination between eye and head movements. By reanalyzing behavioral data from three visual cognitive tasks conducted at the Vision Science Lab under the guidance of Professor Shioiri at Tohoku University, we have uncovered the complex interplay between multiple saccades and fixations in these coordinated movements. This paper encompasses some of my unpublished work from my Ph.D. studies and connects my foundational research in vision science with the current advancements in social robotics. The paper offers an interdisciplinary review, exploring the functioning of the visual cognitive system, the eye-head motor control system, and potential future research directions. Our findings not only enhance our understanding of human behavior but also have promising implications for behavior generation in human-robot interaction and human-centered artificial intelligence. The Vision Science Lab at RIEC has been a hub for vision research for over 20 years, and I consider it a great honor to have been a part of it during one of the most significant periods of my life. Although Professor Shioiri retired in April of this year, he continues to supervise me in my innovation research and even paper writing. His support has been invaluable, both academically and personally. I hope this paper not only contributes to the development of robotics and the research on human-robot interaction but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to Professor Shioiri, whose guidance has been instrumental in my academic journey.

Ltd. in Intelligent Communication and Social Interaction. 📰 Description Scientists from TU Delft faculty of EEMCS and Honda Research Institute (HRI) in Japan are collaborating on developing a comprehensive AI system for human and group understanding. This novel system is envisaged to realize empathetic interaction in a harmonious hybrid society where humans and AI agents live together and interact 24/7. The project is focused on creating a generic AI system that uses nonverbal cues from human body poses, e.g., hand gestures, eye gaze, facial expressions and speech, for various social interaction tasks.
