FedEx Supply Chain has announced the permanent layoff of 611 workers at two distribution centers in Memphis, Tennessee, with the layoffs set to occur by October 11. The decision follows Cummins' decision to transition part of its aftermarket parts distribution from Memphis to a new logistics partner in Indianapolis, citing a need to improve efficiency and better serve customers. FedEx will retain a portion of the business at the Memphis locations, and affected employees will be eligible for job placement, relocation aid, or severance at other FedEx facilities. This marks FedEx's second layoff in the year, after 217 employees were laid off in March at a Middle Tennessee facility. The layoffs are not linked to FedEx’s ongoing 'Network 2.0' network optimization plan.

UPS has announced new fees for international packages entering the US, including a $2.50 per package international processing fee for shipments via UPS Worldwide Express, UPS Worldwide Express Plus, and UPS Worldwide Express NA1, and an entry preparation charge of $10 for shipments under $200 and $20 for those between $200.01 and $800 from Canada. These fees take effect on August 29th and September 8th, respectively, ahead of the expiration of the US de minimis exemption, which was previously allowing shipments under $800 to be tax-exempt. The exemption was closed for China and Hong Kong by President Trump's executive order on May 2, with a global removal set for August 29. FedEx has also raised its international processing fee to $2.50. In response to increased costs, several international shipping companies and countries, including DHL, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, France, Austria, and the UK, have either paused or halted shipments to the US.

The Eastern Iowa Airport recorded its seventh consecutive month of record passenger traffic in July, with a 6% increase compared to July 2024. Year-to-date passenger traffic is up 9% from the same period last year. Airport Director Marty Lenss attributed the growth to increased demand from airlines and travelers, noting that strong passenger numbers indicate the airport is a viable location for adding flight capacity and exploring new routes. American Airlines plans to resume a seasonal Saturday-only flight from Cedar Rapids to Miami on November 8 and add a third daily nonstop to Phoenix in December. Additional special flights are scheduled for University of Iowa football games, including a nonstop to Philadelphia for the Penn State game on October 18, a flight to Oregon on November 8, and one to Michigan State on November 22. Delta Air Lines has also added flights for these events. The airport currently offers nonstop service to 18 destinations via Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, and United Airlines, and is served by FedEx, DHL, and UPS for air cargo.
