We have been pioneering within respiratory allergy for over 100 years thanks to continued dedication from our employees, including our scientists who play a crucial role in research and development. 

One of our many dedicated scientists is Christian Uggerhøj Wøhlk, Associate Director of Immunology in Translational Research, who recently joined ALK after finishing his PhD research project within allergy immunotherapy and allergic asthma at Bispebjerg Hospital.  

Being able to join ALK's research team provided Christian with a line of professional possibilities and was a perfect continuation of his PhD work: 

"With ALK's extensive experience within several immunological areas, I saw a great opportunity to gain an extended understanding of ALK’s research and establish a unique research profile for myself, combining clinical and translational aspects," Christian says.

We grant a pretty awesome research award at ALK! 🔬🏆 It’s called The Henning Løwenstein Research Award, and on 1 March 2024 it will once again be granted to a young scientist who has shown excellence within the field of allergy. 

In the beginning of the 1990s the award was first introduced as a recognition to Løwenstein and his scientific work that has been instrumental in the breakthrough facilitating ALK’s standardisation of allergen extracts in the 1970s.

ALK’s history goes more than a century back to when our pharma company was founded in 1923. Just like today, it can be tough being a startup, and it was not until January 1944, exactly 80 years ago, that our two founders were in a position to hire their first full-time manager to take care of the production and sale of our allergy preparations. It was a huge and important step in the development of ALK. The new employee was a law student named Helle Olrik, who later became Managing Director of ALK.  

Today, our main focus is still to help people living with allergies. ALK now has 2800 dedicated employees and is present in almost 50 countries.

Sunday, 14 January 2024, was a historic day in the Kingdom of Denmark. HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated after serving the country for 52 years, and her son, HM King Frederik X, is now sovereign of Denmark.  

At ALK, we wish to express our sincerest gratitude to HM Queen Margrethe II for being a tremendous representative for Denmark and a great support for the Danish business industry as well as an important ambassador for Danish life science companies in Denmark and abroad throughout her years on the throne.
