BRAC, in collaboration with the BRAC Institiute of Educational Development and ‘Neeramoy’, a digital healthcare platform, has introduced a mental health hotline called ‘Moner Jotno’. The ‘Moner Jotno’ hotline is available every day from 12:00 noon to 2:00am, including holidays, and can be accessed by calling 09643262626 (call charges apply) or through the Neeramoy Patient app on both Android and iOS platforms. Under the Bangladesh America Maitree project, grants totaling $7.534 million (BDT 89 Crore 65 Lakh) have been awarded to 18 local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the first year (FY 2024). The Grants Award Ceremony has taken place today, at Hotel Sheraton in Dhaka. The event has been graced by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Honourable Adviser for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change of the Interim Government, as the Chief Guest. The Director General of the NGO Affairs Bureau, Md Saidur Rahman, has attended as the Guest of Honour. Special guests include USAID Bangladesh Mission Director Reed Aeschliman and BRAC’s Executive Director, Asif Saleh. Funded by USAID and implemented by BRAC, this project aims to strengthen the operational capacities of these selected NGOs through targeted project implementation. The grantees are working in key areas such as agriculture, food security, health, education, child rights, and protection. These local NGOs were selected based on their innovative approaches and commitment to addressing critical regional development challenges. #WorkWithMAITREE #LocallyLedDevelopment

More than one in three people of working age in Bangladesh are youth, according to the nation’s ‘Labour Force Survey 2022’. How can Bangladesh reap the benefits of this demographic dividend to combat plastic waste? Young people from Mongla, Patuakhali, and Burhanuddin, three coastal cities of Bangladesh, raised awareness, organised rallies, mapped critical waste zones and advocated for better waste management plans with local officials. They also launched clean-up drives in Patuakhali and Burhanuddin. Moving forward, these efforts will be integrated into the locally-led adaptation plan of those cities to ensure long term urban climate resilience.

33 million children in Bangladesh were affected this summer due to the heatwave as the country was forced to close its schools for the second consecutive year. They were reopened, but forced to close again after two teachers died and multiple students fell ill. Most schools in Bangladesh have tin roofs. While teachers and students try to stay cool through ventilation and fans, air conditioning is neither affordable nor would it be effective in these buildings - not to mention the dangers it presents.
