🌍 PATHWAYS for holistic livestock farming practices 🌱 🐂 The PATHWAYS Project aims to reduce environmental impacts and address societal needs for safe, nutritious, and affordable meat and dairy by promoting #sustainable livestock farming practices across European food systems. This is achieved through integrating farmers in practice hubs and living labs of best practice examples that will guide policy, research, and business strategies. 🏡 One of PATHWAY’s practice hubs, the Demeter Heumilchbauern in Southwest Germany, is a dairy cooperative of farmers prioritizing animal welfare and integrating livestock harmoniously into farming systems. 🤝 Human development: German Biodynamic Education Network 🌱 🧡💚 In celebration of the 100 years of biodynamic farming, September is dedicated to human development, one of the many contributions of biodynamic farming highlighted throughout 2024. 🌿 Learning, training, and knowledge exchange are a key component to foster human development and therefore a long-term commitment of #biodynamic farming. The German Biodynamic Education Network is a good example of this commitment. Since 1983, the Network is dedicated to achieving social, ecological, and economic #sustainability by offering training in biodynamic farming across Germany with around 350 apprenticeships. 🌟 In 2022, the Biodynamic Education Network convinced the jury of the 'National Award - Education for Sustainable Development' with its exemplary commitment to education and its special dedication to the global sustainability goals of the United Nations. 🌾 Biodynamic farming: Human development 🤝 🌱 This year marks the 100 years of biodynamic farming. To celebrate, the various contributions of biodynamic farming are highlighted every month. In September, we are shining a light on human development and empowerment - a core element of biodynamic farming. 🌿 In this regard, learning, training, and knowledge exchange are fundamental. These activities have a long history in #biodynamic farming as farming is a continuous learning process itself. It requires constant adaptation to external constraints such as varying climatic conditions or different soil types. But biodynamic farmers also aim for higher objectives, striving to make their farm more #resilient and #sustainable , while at the same time ensuring economic viability. 🌍 To support human development further, biodynamic farming encourages work in collaboration at the farm level. Animals can, for instance, be held in partnership between farmers which enables to share the constraints and for all farms to benefit from animal presence. 🍽️ World Food Day: Right to Foods for a Better Life and Future 🌍 🍅 Today, we stand up in solidarity for the human right to food on the FAO ’s World Food Day. Food is a basic human need, but it is also a question of access to adequate food. Therefore, this year’s World Food Day theme focuses on ‘Foods’ which stands for diversity, nutrition, affordability, accessibility and safety. 🌾 As Anthoni Selvi, #biodynamic farmer and trainer in India, points out, access to healthy food is a human right. Despite global food production exceeding the needs of the world’s population, over 2.8 billion people are unable to afford a healthy diet. These issues are exacerbated by crises and climate change, affecting the poorer and more vulnerable the most, damaging agrifood systems, and contributing to environmental degradation. 🥕 Because healthy food is a human right, it has always been a priority of biodynamic farming. 🌍 International Rural Women’s Day 👩 🌾 International Rural Women’s Day is a day to recognize the invaluable contributions of women for the global food system. They play indeed a critical role in food production, food security and nutrition, land and natural resource management, and climate resilience. 🏡 According to the FAO , women often make up more than 43% of the agricultural labour force. However, despite their essential role in #agriculture and rural economies, women disproportionately experience poverty, exclusion, and the impacts of climate change. On average they earn 18.4% less than their male counterparts, with limited access to land and agricultural markets. 🚜 The FAO estimates that closing the gender gap in agrifood systems could boost global food production by 1%, thus reducing global food insecurity for nearly 45 million people.
