This summer, we have been building our new 'kilo-lab' facility over in Science Creates St Philips. It is now fully operational, and is allowing us to fast track our materials development roadmap by closely integrating production and applications testing.

Today I signed an open letter to Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak calling for policies to accelerate UK ClimateTech to be prioritised under the next government. 
The letter was written by Startup Coalition and ClimateImpact and signed by over 180 ClimateTech leaders. 
Whoever wins on 4th July must prioritise ClimateTech innovation - it is an environmental and economic imperative.

Part of Kelpi’s mission is to engage key changemakers around our goal to reduce plastic pollution from packaging. So welcoming Kerry McCarthy, shadow Minister for Climate Change, to our Bristol HQ today gave us a chance to discuss microplastics, toxicity and biodiversity.  
Today’s visit gave Kerry, the Labour candidate for the Bristol East constituency which includes Kelpi’s laboratories and offices, the opportunity to learn more about Kelpi’s unique material and our focus on eliminating single-use plastic packaging by developing a viable seaweed-derived alternative that matches or even exceeds the performance of many fossil-fuel plastics.  
Plastic production and disposal emits around 3% of global emissions. The most visible environmental impact of plastic is of course the waste that ends up in our rivers and oceans, but it’s the less visible microplastics that present such a threat to human and planetary health. 
The circular economy, green finance and the huge potential of seaweed in addressing climate change all formed key parts of today’s discussion around sustainable packaging.

1. Increase British Business Bank funding by 20% to equalise opportunities for the South West tech sector with other regions.
2. Promote the South West as a leader in the creative industries by investing in culture-rich education and new creative technologies.
3. Recognise Bristol and the South West as major UK hubs for deep tech with a sustained investment strategy for public and private sector growth.

As the 2024 UK General Election nears, we’re pushing for the South West to play a pivotal role in the UK’s industrial future.

Blackfinch Ventures leads funding round of over £4.3 million for sustainable packaging innovator, Kelpi

The #fundinground will enable the company to deploy seaweed-based coatings in recyclable paper and card packaging for the food & drink and cosmetics & personal care sectors, replacing single-use fossil fuel plastics which take hundreds of years to decompose.  

Kelpi’s bio-material is unique in matching or even exceeding the performance of plastic, in particular with a strong water barrier and resistance to greasy contents or acidic foods.  

Dr Reuben Wilcock, Head of Ventures at Blackfinch, said: “Kelpi stood out to us as a strong combination of world-leading scientific innovation with extensive entrepreneurial experience. Their technology has immense commercial potential and we’re excited to be backing the company to scale up and go to market.”

In a huge step forward for the business, Kelpi has secured £4.35 million in investment to take our pioneering biomaterial technology to market. The funding round, announced today, will allow us to expand operations, grow the team and run scale-up pilots to plot our pathway to launch. 
Kelpi’s funding round was led by Blackfinch Ventures, with funding from Green Angel Ventures, Kadmos Capital Ltd, QantX, Evenlode Foundation and Maven Capital Partners-South West Investor Fund as well as follow-on investment from Bristol Private Equity Club, One Planet Capital and private angel investors. Having initially sought £3m in equity investment, raising £4.35m (US $5.5m) constitutes a significant success for Kelpi.
