This year’s opening of NKG Indonesia Imports marks a significant milestone for us at NKG. It is an expansion of our presence in the Asian coffee market and strengthens our global network. 
 
Last Friday, the official celebration started with a warm welcome address by Mira Yudhawati, COO NKG Indonesia Imports, followed by a presentation on NKG and the NKG Asia Hub by Jan-Willem Otten, Managing Director Bero Coffee Singapore. One of the key moments was a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing the official launch. Afterwards, Edward Helmond, Country Manager NG Vietnam, provided valuable producer perspectives. The event concluded with the opportunity to connect. Among the more than 200 industry friends and partners were representatives from the Colombian Embassy, as well as colleagues from NG Vietnam, NKG Berindo Jaya, NKG’s other company based in Indonesia, and Bero Coffee Singapore Pte Ltd. 
 
We are excited about the future and look forward to driving our success further with our colleagues at NKG Indonesia Imports. Their expertise and dedication will undoubtedly contribute to our continued growth in the region. 🌱 ❤️

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) presents significant challenges to companies dealing with agricultural commodities – this is of course true for us at NKG as well. Nevertheless, our goal and ambition are to ensure uninterrupted coffee flows into the EU. Therefore, we have stepped up our efforts to ensure business continuity on time. 
 
With our global network of 17 export companies and deep-rooted relationships in local coffee sectors, we are well positioned to meet the challenges ahead. We at NKG have developed a comprehensive strategy to address EUDR requirements. Our proprietary supply chain programs, NKG Verified and NKG Bloom, already exceed EUDR standards and serve as blueprints for compliance. Furthermore, our field teams work with producers daily, providing services to address root causes of deforestation. So far, our efforts have focused on information sharing, fostering a common understanding of the regulation both internally and with business partners. We have established protocols for the consistent mapping of coffee plots and the creation of high-quality polygons, which are essential for accurate monitoring and compliance. As a worldwide operating group, we can leverage the power of over 300 colleagues working in sustainability globally.
 
We have set up a comprehensive, reproducible methodology to validate geodata quality, its plausibility as coffee growing area and check specific deforestation and legality risk. This method serves as a global NKG benchmark and is based on publicly available resources. 
 
Efficient due diligence processes are essential to manage information flows effectively, which will be assured by one unified NKG system for EUDR and Business Partner Due Diligence, among others. Therefore, we at NKG partner with osapiens.
 
“By collaborating with osapiens, we aim to strengthen NKG’s position as a leading green coffee service provider. This partnership will increase efficiency and maximize value creation by enhancing our business relationships. Additionally, it will ensure the best possible and streamlined preparation for EUDR compliance across our entire group”, explains NKG Group COO Ruben Scholz. 
 
With osapiens, we will harmonize data, establishing clear protocols for both suppliers and customers. For seamless and efficient data flow, a single endpoint will be provided and complemented by a portal, including applicable EU TRACES information. What do you learn as a dual student at NKG? What is most interesting and how can you proceed in your career after your degree? Thanks to Jonas Meine, who will finish his Bachelor of Science in International Management in the coming months, we will get some inspiring insights and learn more about his personal experience at NKG! 
 
“After three incredible years, my dual studies at Neumann Gruppe (NG) are coming to an end, but it's only the beginning of my journey in the coffee industry. With my bachelor’s degree in International Management almost completed, a new chapter of exciting work awaits me as a trader at our group company InterAmerican Coffee - Europe (IAC). I'll be focusing on sourcing and selling specialty coffees from various origins and maintaining strong relationships with European roasters to support their product development.

Reflecting on my time at NG, I've gained invaluable experience, knowledge, and friendships. The dual study program allowed me to blend theory with practice, providing a perfect introduction to the business world. Working in various departments, I developed a deep understanding of the coffee industry's complexities and discovered my passion for specialty coffee.

Highlights of my journey include the in-depth lessons on green coffee, daily cuppings for quality assurance, and supporting the organization of the ‘Be Together 2022’ event in Hamburg with about 100 participants in management positions from NKG´s group companies all over the globe. Additionally, I had the pleasure of assisting at a cupping event hosted by IAC in collaboration with Hoppenworth & Ploch in Frankfurt, meeting customers face-to-face, and attending the Frankfurt Coffee Festival. The after-work events with my trainee team and the company's annual summer parties are moments I'll never forget. 

Looking back, I'm truly grateful for the opportunities and experiences I had while studying at NKG. With my bachelor’s thesis submitted and my degree almost completed, I'm excited about the new challenges and opportunities ahead. I'm eager to apply the knowledge I've gained and dive deeper into the world of specialty coffee.”

As we all know, coffee as an agricultural product is particularly vulnerable to climate change. For us at NKG, it is of great importance that we protect the environment and make sure that people around the world can enjoy their beloved cup of coffee for a long time to come. Part of this commitment is the analysis of our group-wide environmental footprint, which we published in our NKG Sustainability Report 2022 (and also mentioned last week on Earth Day while talking about our Corporate Water Footprint). One of our main goals in this context is the reduction of carbon emissions along our coffee supply chain to enhance our overall environmental performance. In line with this commitment, we at NKG established specific emission reduction targets for both energy and agriculture-related emissions. To achieve this, we have initiated several proactive measures in collaboration with our group companies.

One example we would like to introduce today is a solar project at NKG East Africa, which Amolloh Melyne, Regional Responsible Business Program Manager, was so kind as to share with us all: 
“At NKG East Africa, we have embraced the course to mitigate our impact on climate change and adapt our business to the current and expected changes. We acknowledge the greater contribution of the supply chain (scope 3 emission) to our footprint but are also certain that change must start from our in-house operations (scopes 1&2 emission).
We are happy to share some information about the commissioning of a solar project in our regional headquarters, Nairobi through a partnership with Equator Energy. The project is the first of its kind in our regional portfolio. Every kWh of solar energy consumed from the project, we avoid ~1 kg of CO2 and save ~0.05 l of water with a guaranteed savings from the discounted rates.
The journey is on and in addition to the climate informed projects already in the pipeline, we will tirelessly work towards achieving our emission reduction targets. We are all about coffee and we shall protect this precious commodity from the impact of climate change.”

 On International Women’s Day 2024, we started our series with the motto "No women, no coffee". Numerous women have made invaluable contributions with their hard work, dedication and ideas along the whole green coffee supply chain as farmers, pickers, producers, baristas, and roasters. Yet, they do not get visibility they deserve. With our series, we want to spread awareness about all these women and asked some of our great female colleagues at NKG why we need even more women in the coffee industry. Because no matter where around the globe or which position along the supply chain – we could not do the work without all our female colleagues. 

Today, we are sharing the final post of our series with you: the insights from some of our amazing women in Europe. The project was super interesting and fun, but it also shows why it it still so important to celebrate International Women’s Day. And we will not only do it once a year – we will work on establishing equal opportunities for everyone along the green coffee supply chain each and every day.
