We’ve just released our Quarterly Report for December 2023, highlighted by record half year aluminium production, 20% increases in zinc and nickel production and a 7% increase in silver production. 

As we enter the second half, strengthening market conditions for many of our commodities, our planned production growth and ongoing cost management focus, position us well to capture higher margins.

This week I’ve had the privilege of attending the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos on behalf of South32.

It has been fascinating and inspiring to hear from a range of leaders of government, industry and organisations from around the world.

The world continues to face significant challenges – with economic uncertainty, ongoing geopolitical tensions, new demands around emerging technologies and, most critically, the existential threat of climate change.

Navigating these challenges won’t be easy – and we all have a role to play in addressing them. Global action is needed to achieve a carbon-neutral and nature-positive world by 2050, and mining has a critical role to play on that journey.

In the past few years, we have transformed our portfolio towards the commodities needed for a low-carbon future, like copper and low-carbon aluminium. Our growth options and exploration program are also focused on important commodities such as zinc, copper and battery-grade manganese.

Responsibly developing these resources and continuing to be dynamic and agile in our approach, will be critical to delivering the raw materials the world needs.

Working collaboratively with our peers in the mining industry, our communities, suppliers, customers, and the many, many industries which make use of the commodities we produce, will be crucial to achieving net zero.

As the week here draws to a close, I’m excited about the role South32 will play in this transition and am energised to take on this challenge with our world class team. 

Together we can make a difference – now, and for future generations.

Access to safe drinking water is a human right, but for some people it isn’t always readily available. That’s why Hillside Aluminium has partnered with the King Cetshwayo District Municipality to provide approximately 10,000 local households with reliable access to clean water.
 
The project, due for completion in June, will bring clean water to a number of areas in the district through construction of boreholes and installation of handpumps, water storage tanks and galvanised stands.

The Minerals Council South Africa Women in Mining Leadership Forum recently recognised ten women from across the industry as Safety Heroes – including three of our South32 team!

The Women in Mining 2023 Safety Heroes were recognised for their significant contributions to making their workplaces and organisations safer places to work. 

Congratulations to Juvena Naidoo, Surface Plant Manager at Hotazel Manganese Mines, Yogen Chetty, Manager Project CADE, and Zanele Madinane, Manager Health, Safety, Environment and Risk at Hillside Aluminium, as well as the other 2023 safety heroes for this well-deserved recognition.

Early childhood education sets the foundations for lifelong learning and development and has long-lasting positive impacts, but access to quality early learning services is a challenge for many families across Australia, particularly in regional and remote areas.

In Julia Creek and Cloncurry, towns near our Cannington mine in north-west Queensland, new early learning services have recently been established by the local Shires with funding from the Queensland Government. But with significant demand, staffing was identified as a potential issue for the centres.

To address this, Cannington is providing funding to employ a childcare specialist, who will help to ensure both facilities operate at the required capacity once opened.
 
By significantly increasing access to early childhood education in the region, the centres will help give local kids the best start in life and leave a lasting contribution to the community for years to come. We're proud to be able to make a difference by supporting these important outcomes.

In alumina production, boilers are essential for the generation of steam which is used in the refining process. Traditionally, the boilers at Worsley Alumina have been coal-fired – but a recent conversion of a boiler to instead use natural gas is set to reduce Worsley's emissions significantly, with conversion of a second boiler planned for next year.

Our Brazil Aluminium and Marketing teams have just marked an important milestone, loading South32´s first export shipment of low-carbon aluminium from our share of production from the Alumar Smelter since its restart in FY22.

We hold a 40% non-operating share of the Alumar smelter, which produces aluminium ingots for the domestic and export markets, and our share of production is powered by 100% low-cost renewable power. Restarting the smelter has been important for the São Luis area – generating 5,500 jobs and significant local investment. The shipment has been loaded at the Porto do Itaqui and is on its way to Europe.
