Great report released by our friends at Crowe, outlining KPI benchmark data for denials from 2021 through November 2022. Several key takeaways based on what they share:

- CMS monthly enrollment reports show Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment steadily growing
- Jan. 2021 to Jan. 2022 they grew from 26.6M to 29M – 9% increase
- Jan. 2022 to Jan. 2023 they grew from 29M to 30.8M – 6.1% increase
- Jan. 2023 to Feb. 2023 they grew from 30.8M to 31.4M – 2.2% increase
- Value of initial clinical denials represented 4.2% of billed inpatient dollars – up 18.5% from 2021
- Higher denial rates for MA plans compared to other payor categories – 5.8% vs. 3.7%
- Inpatient revenue write-offs were at 5.9% vs. 3.6% in 2021 – 64% increase
- Isolating the MA plan population, write-offs were at 8.5% vs. 4.7% in 2021 – 81% increase

The report also summarizes some key areas providers can focus on to improve NET revenue performance. With the capitated model of MA plans and enrollments continuing to increase, the recent CMS RADV rule change is likely to further fuel the upward denial trend. Deploying strategies to ensure patient charts accurately reflect medical necessity and are coded correctly, prior to claim submission, will become increasingly important preventative measures to take in 2023 and the years ahead.
