Deeptech is indispensable to solve global societal and systemic challenges. It also faces unique challenges: it is a capital-intensive sector that often requires long-term commitments from investors. 

Dutch start-up connector Techleap & Deep Tech Fund of Invest-NL initiated the Deeptech Capital Expedition. By bringing entrepreneurs and investors together, we explored the activation of venture capital to prepare for the global scaling of European DeepTech. 🌎

The two-day program explored attracting capital and building stronger international relationships. We started with an inspiring session from a record breaking polar explorer and climate investor Ben Saunders, followed by interactive discussions and networking opportunities. Vorige week heeft Umincorp, één van onze grotere investeringen, voor een aantal van haar dochter ondernemingen surceance van betaling moeten aanvragen, waarvan twee zijn omgezet in faillissement. Dit is natuurlijk een hard gelag. Voor de medewerkers van het bedrijf en voor iedereen die keihard gewerkt heeft om uit plastic huisafval hoogwaardige grondstoffen te winnen, op weg naar een circulaire economie. 

Helaas blijkt het probleem veel groter dan één bedrijf. Vrijwel de hele plastic recycling sector in Nederland en in Europa staat onder zware druk. Belangrijkste oorzaak: sinds ruim een jaar gelden er dumpprijzen voor nieuw plastic door massale invoer hiervan van buiten de EU. De verplichting om (deels) gerecycled plastic te gebruiken in onder andere nieuwe verpakkingen laat nog zo’n 5 jaar op zich wachten. 

Zowel Het Parool, NRC, de Volkskrant en het Nederlands Dagblad schreven over de problematiek van de recycling sector. Ton van der Giessen, commissaris bij Umincorp deed zijn verhaal in EenVandaag uitzending van 23 januari. Vanuit Invest-NL pleiten we onder andere voor garantiestelling op voorraden en het versnellen van Nederlandse- en Europese regelgeving, bijvoorbeeld voor uitgebreide producentenverantwoordelijkheid.

Invest-NL heeft een vervolginvestering van €5 miljoen gedaan in Onera Health's €30 miljoen Series C-financieringsronde. Deze investering draagt bij aan toegankelijk slaaponderzoek en vermindert zorgkosten. Dit resulteert in een betere levenskwaliteit voor patiënten met slaapstoornissen. 💤 

Door complexe onderzoeksmethoden toegankelijk te maken voor een breder publiek, verplaatst Onera Health een deel van de ziekenhuiszorg naar de thuisomgeving van de patiënt. "Het revolutionaire karakter van Onera's oplossing is een game changer op het gebied van diagnostiek voor slaapaandoeningen," aldus Investment Manager Bram Sprangers. 

Nieuwe investeerders EQT Life Sciences en Gimv leiden de €30 miljoen Series C-financieringsronde voor Onera Health. Naast Invest-NL sluiten ook Innovation Industries, imec.xpand, BOM en 15th Rock opnieuw aan bij deze equity-ronde.
