Green Minerals (GEM) is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd ( SMD ) on October 31st, 2024. This MoU establishes a framework to jointly develop equipment and methodologies for the sustainable exploration of Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS) within Norway's jurisdiction, which was formally opened for marine minerals activities on January 9th, 2024. A key focus of the MoU is the design and construction of a Core Sampling Unit (CSU) essential for validating and assessing potential resources. GEM and SMD will also collaborate to optimize sustainable practices in future exploration campaigns, integrating simultaneous operations such as geophysics and environmental surveying. The targeted completion for the CSU design and production is set for initial commercial deployment by Q2 2026. The partnership addresses potential future limitations around the availability and capability of CSUs. SMD holds a prominent role in the consortium responsible for GEM's Harsh Environment Deep Sea Mining (HEDSM) system concept study and is a preferred partner for GEM. Last week at #Arendalsuka there where several debates regarding the Norwegian governments opening of mineral activity on the Norwegian continetal shelf. At the main stage minister of energy Terje Aasland procalimed that the opening decision is the most efficient and responsible way of acquire the much needed knowledge of the resources. He also emphasized the need for greater access to and self-sufficiency in minerals, highlighting how the energy transition will significantly boost demand. Currently, both Norway and the EU are heavily reliant on these critical raw materials from countries like China and Russia. This dependency is problematic, not only for geopolitical reasons but also due to the concerning approaches some countries take toward health, environmental, and safety standards. Today, the Norwegian authorities presented the areas suggested to be announced for the first marine minerals' licensing round on the Norwegian continental shelf. Copper is vital for the green energy transition, and as demand rises, companies are exploring the potential of marine minerals. The world is going through a major transition towards digitisation, electrification, and green energy. Why go to the deep sea for copper? Copper has been mined by men since the stone age; it is the most important raw material in the industrial age. Marine minerals have been the source of copper from ophiolite complexes during the entire time; it has just been mined on land after continental drift has placed them above sea level and shuffled them around a bit, and temperature and pressure have metamorphosed the rocks. We now have the knowledge and technology to go where they form. Some have expressed concerns about deep-sea mining, but mining raw materials in locations where we will get the most metal-per-kg of rock with the least environmental impact must be considered. Extinct seafloor massive sulphide deposits along mid-ocean ridges show the potential of discoveries in the magnitude of 10s Mt of ore with Cu grades of 4-6% and potential of byproducts such as cobalt.
