Remora Robotics is a Norwegian technology company, and have since its inception developed, tested and now commercialized its fully automated robotics system for cleaning fish pens.

Our colleague Gitte Krohn-Pettersen works in operations, but she has a fascinating background in marine biology. And guess what? She knows quite a bit about jellyfish!
 
"Yes, I'm fascinated by jellyfish, especially those that produce light. Few people know that many jellyfish in our waters can produce light, but I wrote my master's thesis on bioluminescence," explains Gitte.
 
She holds a bachelor's degree in biomarine innovation and a master's degree in ocean resources, both from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Ålesund and Trondheim, respectively. Thus, she knows far more than most about marine life and fish welfare. Having been born and raised right by the sea, the ocean has always played a significant role in her life.
 
"Even though my job today is more about operations, there's no doubt that our robots have a positive impact on these factors and that this is important for making the industry more sustainable," she says.
 
She both hopes and believes that, in time, even more of her expertise can be used to gather more data about the conditions in the cages.
 
"Once the robots are there, they can be used for more than just cleaning, so it's an exciting thought what we can achieve in the future."

But back to the jellyfish, are there really jellyfish that produce light in our waters?
 
"Yes, and more than we think. Some are very small and hard to see. The water needs to be still and dark for you to see it properly. But they exist everywhere!"

Our CFO, Liv, has a lot on her plate and wishes for someone else to take over as CFO at our company.

Over the past six months, she has been a key asset for Remora Robotics, with her extensive experience in finance. She holds a degree in business economics and has 20 years of experience in the oil service industry, serving as either a controller or CFO. She has also had two stints abroad, where she covered the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and China.

"In recent years, I have been the CFO at aquaculture companies, both in aquaculture, onshore facilities, and now within technology at Remora. My years abroad have given me valuable experience working with different cultures and have taught me a lot about cross-cultural communication," says Liv.

She highlights the young and dynamic environment at Remora, and that even after 40 years in the workforce, she still learns something new here every day. She also views positively that Remora is in a scaling phase, which gives a CFO good opportunities to influence all parts of the company.

"We are also so few that we get to know each other well, the company has clear goals within sustainability, and on top of all I have a fantastic view from the office!"

For a new CFO, she emphasizes the following qualities:

🟢 Flexible
🟢 High working capacity
🟢 Interest in the product and what happens in the company. Ability to turn knowledge into numbers, budgets, and reporting.
🟢 Sufficient knowledge of accounting, payroll, and annual accounts to have a good dialogue with accounting offices and auditors.

"May also have knowledge of the company secretary role and all the formalities one must go through with regard to public authorities," she says.

"Working closely with Liv has been incredibly beneficial for both me and the company. The partnership between the CEO and CFO is essential to drive focus and progress, and our teamwork has been key in guiding Remora towards our goals," says Svein Erik Gregersen, CEO of Remora Robotics.

Jon Egil is our field technician and spends most of his days either on the boat or at the facilities. When he's not there, he's likely taking a turn in the workshop.
 
"Three to four days a week, I'm usually out at sea. My tasks range from installation to maintenance of the robots and, importantly, maintaining good customer contact," he says, and continues:
 
"I'm one of those who get closest to the actual users of our cleaning robots." says Jon Egil.
 
He has extensive experience in aquaculture in Norway, working in service and maintenance. Over the years, he has identified opportunities to improve the cleaning process. Thus, Remora is a perfect fit for him.
 
"Remora's innovative mindset and how we make the cleaning of facilities more sustainable appealed to me. Our values align very closely, so it was a good match."
 
He points out that technical understanding and experience at sea are crucial for the position, especially since a lot of time is spent on a boat. He often needs to be solution-oriented to address issues quickly.
 
"Being given such a significant responsibility so quickly has laid a solid foundation for further growth. I have grown a lot on my own, thanks to the trust I've been given."

AquaNext's final day is about to start! Yesterday, we were visited by the Minister of Digitalization, Karianne Tung, who had the opportunity to test drive our robot. We also participated in the "Technology Pitches" at DNB-Globen, moderated by Mathias Sagevik, and welcomed many visitors to our booth.

Meet Roger, our Operations Manager who ensures our robots effectively perform their tasks of keeping the pens clean.

He brings a broad experience into Remora, especially from the subsea industry where he has worked extensively as an ROV operator and inspector. With this and experience in automation and as an operations technician, Roger fits perfectly at Remora.

"The days are very different and can range from operational meetings with clients, personnel follow-ups, leading development projects, to ensuring the robots are operational," says Roger.

He wants Remora to become a leading player in the industry and enjoys the dynamic work environment and the opportunity to positively influence the aquaculture industry. In his spare time, he likes to be outdoors and to exercise.

"I am very fond of outdoor activities and exercise. I actively play football in fifth division for the local club Jarl. On the field, I'm a bit of a utility player and can be used in various positions, but I mostly play left back."

Being a utility player is no downside, and it fits in well with us!
