The company operates general and acute care hospitals that offers medical and surgical services, including inpatient care, intensive care, cardiac care, diagnostic, and emergency services; and outpatient services, such as outpatient surgery, laboratory, radiology, respiratory therapy, cardiology, and physical therapy. It also operates outpatient health care facilities consisting of freestanding ambulatory surgery centers, freestanding emergency care facilities, urgent care facilities, walk-in clinics, diagnostic and imaging centers, rehabilitation and physical therapy centers, radiation and oncology therapy centers, physician practices, and various other facilities. In addition, the company operates psychiatric hospitals, which provide therapeutic programs comprising child, adolescent and adult psychiatric care, adolescent and adult alcohol, drug abuse treatment, and counseling services. As of December 31, 2021, it operated 182 hospitals, including 175 general and acute care hospitals, five psychiatric hospitals, and two rehabilitation hospitals; 125 freestanding surgery centers; and 21 freestanding endoscopy centers in 20 states and England. The company was formerly known as HCA Holdings, Inc. HCA Healthcare, Inc. was founded in 1968 and is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.

This week, HCA Healthcare patient Victoria Lissa had an emotional reunion with the care team at HCA Florida Westside Hospital who performed her life-changing brain surgery. Prior to her awake craniotomy, Victoria was experiencing seizures, vision loss and speech impairment due to a painful brain lesion. A team of neurosurgical specialists at HCA Florida Westside Hospital – including Dr. Bryan Leiber, Dr. Nicholas Ahye, Dr. Imani Thorton and speech language pathologist, Danielle Bailey – worked together to develop a personalized surgical care plan for Victoria. They had a shared goal to achieve the best possible outcome for Victoria so that she could enjoy life with her six children.

“This lesion in Victoria’s brain was in an area responsible for understanding speech,” explained Dr. Bryan Lieber, a neurosurgeon at the HCA Florida Healthcare hospital. “The only way to ensure we protected her speech capability was to have her communicate with us during surgery. That's why she needed to be awake and interactive.”

Today, the 31-year-old mother, is healthy and happy, which shined through in the smiles and words of gratitude she shared with the Plantation, Florida care team. “She almost indefinitely lost her voice; yet moments like that make everyone else speechless,” Dr. Lieber reflected.
