🚀 Reflections on the Wellington Growth Jam – International Edition 🌍 Our 5th Movac Jam for 2024 took place yesterday and was another stellar event exploring how Australian and NZ tech companies can thrive in international markets. Our engaging speakers shared incredible insights, stories & actionable takeaways, here are the key highlights: ✨ Natalie Screen of Accessit Library Software reminded us that in high-performing companies, every team needs to win. She emphasised the importance of building a best-in-class customer success team and how being strategic, fixing the boring stuff, and putting your customers first can turn your customers into your largest sales team. 💡 Jamie MacDonald of Storypark shared why sometimes the obvious choice isn’t the right one. His story about promoting from within, over hiring experienced executives made all the difference to cracking the Canadian market. The lesson: sometimes you think you want the person who has seen the end of the film, but really you want the person who can write a new script. 🎯 Kagan Sen (カーン シェン) of Canva highlighted the critical role of understanding local customs when expanding internationally. Canva’s success in Japan was driven by hiring local talent and creating a truly localised product and marketing approach - showing the importance of empowering teams to have full autonomy i.e. treat your market entry team as a separate start-up, allocate resources and measure performance accordingly. 💼 Jo Mills of Fuel50 had us thinking about client relationships like romantic partnerships. Fuel50 achieved over 80% of revenue from the US by working with clients who had shared values, showing up for them (even if it means a 12-hour ride party bus ride to get to a meeting), selling clients a vision of the future and working together to deliver measurable outcomes. 🎉 Jacob Lawrie of projectworks.io reminded us of the human side of marketing. Jacob's story covered building a meme campaign from deep industry knowledge (in hair and beauty) by hiring people who'd worked in the industry. The campaign demonstrated the power of language-market fit and how authentic engagement drives credibility and advocacy. 📈 Andrew Morrow of PartsTrader LLC shared a candid look at the rollercoaster of expanding into the US, and the importance of having a "lighthouse" customer to build momentum, FOMO and trust, even when things don’t go as planned. When things go wrong, be upfront about communicating with your key stakeholders, including your investors to bring them on the journey.
