COP29 Azerbaijan has officially kicked off, with parties already reaching a consensus on standards for the creation of carbon credits under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement 🌎 The standards will "enable climate action by increasing demand for carbon credits and ensure that the international carbon market operates with integrity under the supervision of the UN." Last Thursday, Minister of Climate Change Hon. Simon Watts released the Climate Change Commission 's report on the domestic emissions reductions that Aotearoa New Zealand could achieve as part of our second nationally determined contribution (NDC2), which shows domestic emissions reductions can substantially contribute to NDC2 – as long as further action to reduce our emissions starts before 2031. “Our recent emissions monitoring report showed that Aotearoa New Zealand is making progress but could still fall short of meeting the country's future emissions budgets. We need to increase the momentum with rapid and achievable action to get the country on track," said outgoing CCC Chair Rod Carr . According to the preliminary findings from a study commissioned by Air New Zealand and LanzaJet , turning woody waste in New Zealand (including forestry slash) into sustainable aviation fuel could create an industry worth $430 million a year, as well as hundreds of jobs🌲 “These initial findings support that alternative jet fuel can be produced here in Aotearoa from our own locally-grown woody waste, which is very positive for a country that is heavily reliant on long-haul aviation and trade and currently imports 100% of its jet fuel," says Air NZ Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer Kiri Hannifin . Another way to encourage the behaviours we want to see is by altering the choice architecture around us.
