Known as #Tihar in Nepal, Diwali is a major Hindu festival celebrated over five days. Often called the “Festival of Lights,” it’s marked by countless oil lamps (diyas) that illuminate the darkness, symbolizing luck and prosperity. The festival is deeply rooted in mythology and dedicated to various deities. It commemorates the triumph of the god Rama over the demon Ravana. When Rama returned to his kingdom, people lit oil lamps to brighten his path home. Today, the festivities largely center on the goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi, and the goddess of strength, Kali, who are honored for peace, protection, and abundance. Yet Diwali is much more than a religious celebration—it’s a cultural event that brings people together, fostering joy, unity, and renewed hope. With that in mind, we wish you a happy Diwali! The World of Japanese Senchas: Variety in Every Cup 🍵 At first glance, many senchas may look quite similar, but don't be fooled – their flavours could hardly be more distinct! Depending on the prefecture, soil, and climate, unique flavours develop that make each #sencha truly special. Of course, the tea plant itself plays a major role as well. Over time, numerous different cultivars have been developed, with #Yabukita being the most widespread and well-known. Its balanced profile, combining sweetness, umami, and strength, makes it particularly versatile. A close relative, #Okumidori , which was cultivated from Yabukita, shares similar characteristics, while #Benifuki brings more #Assam -like notes with its higher bitterness. Our latest discovery, however, is #Shizu 7132, which captivates with its delicate cherry blossom flavour 🌸🌿 But the variety doesn't end there: cultivation and production are just as crucial as the prefecture and cultivar. 'Sencha' literally means "steamed tea" and encompasses a wide range of categories, such as #Kabusecha and #Gyokuro . One aspect that is particularly important in Japan is the shading of the tea plants. While some senchas are never shaded, Kabusecha leaves grow in the shade for around 7-20 days, and Gyokuro leaves for at least 20 days. Shading slows the growth of the plant, allowing it to produce more chlorophyll, amino acids, and β-carotene – which affects not only the colour but also the flavour of the tea. Finally, the type of sencha is determined during processing, when oxidation is halted by steaming: Fukamushicha (long steaming), Chumushicha (medium steaming), or Asamushicha (short steaming). This is where the differences in flavour and texture are revealed and are then further refined in subsequent production steps, making each sencha truly unique ✨ Whether it is the region of origin, the cultivar, or the production method – sencha offers an incredible variety of flavours and characters. A true experience for anyone wishing to discover the world of #tea 🍃

Understanding the Tea Plant: A Quick Overview 🌿✨ The history of #tea dates back to around 2,737 BC in China’s Yunnan province, where the tea plant was first recorded. From the two main varieties, Camellia sinensis 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 (smaller leaves) and 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢 (larger leaves), an extraordinary array of teas has emerged over the centuries. Through different processing methods, #WhiteTea , #GreenTea , #OolongTea , #BlackTea , and #PuErhTea are crafted from these same leaves – each offering its own unique flavour profile. This remarkable diversity isn’t by chance: careful crossbreeding and selection have led to the development of countless #cultivars . These specialised strains make tea plants more resilient and continually introduce new and exciting flavours. Today, we have thousands of plant strains, all derived from about 20 original mother cultivars – some of which you can explore in our photo gallery. But the journey of the tea plant didn’t stop in #China . In #Japan , Chinese cultivars evolved into unique varieties like Yabukita, Benifuki, Fushun, Okumidori, and Saemidori. As early as the 8th century, monks brought the first tea plants to Japan, where they gradually adapted into what we now know as Zairai tea plants. Over time, these plants were selectively bred to suit Japan’s specific climate, resulting in around 150 distinct Japanese cultivars today. #India has also seen the benefits of selective breeding. The Tocklai Tea Research Association in Assam has been at the forefront of #TeaCultivation research since 1911, producing notable cultivars often referred to as clones. A prime example is the AV2 cultivar, originally from the Dooars region, which is now cherished in #Darjeeling for its delicate floral notes. Today, we'd like to take you on a journey into the world of Pu Erh tea and introduce you to one of the 18 famous tea mountains in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China 📍 This region is carefully preserved as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its natural beauty is reflected in the centuries-old tea trees, many of which are around 150 years old, with some even reaching up to 300 years of age. Thanks to the abundance of natural insect predators, there's no need for pesticides, which helps preserve the purity of the environment 🌍🦋 The wild tea plants in these forests are privately owned by the Dai and Bulang minorities. These families cultivate the tea bushes with a wealth of knowledge passed down through generations, preserving their traditions 🌱👨🌾 In the tea gardens of this region, both white and black teas are produced. For the sought-after Sheng and Shu Pu Erh teas, the naturally dried leaves are sold to Menghai, where specialists process them into the highest quality Pu Erh tea. Experience the Magic of Mate Tea – A South American Tradition for Your Everyday Life! 🌿✨ Have you ever tried mate tea? This herbal infusion from South America, predominantly cultivated in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, has been gaining popularity here over the past several years. Its allure lies not only in its unique flavour but also in its effects: the caffeine in mate is released slowly and steadily, providing a gentle lift without the jittery sensation often associated with coffee. Mate is made from the leaves of the mate shrub and is traditionally enjoyed in a calabash – a drinking vessel originally crafted from a dried and hollowed-out bottle gourd, though now also available in ceramic or metal. While there are various methods of preparation, the basic process involves placing the dried mate leaves into the calabash and steeping them with hot, but not boiling, water. A bombilla – a special metal straw with an integrated sieve – is used for drinking, filtering out the loose leaves. The amount of water used per steeping is typically small, but the mate can be infused multiple times, with the flavour profile evolving with each infusion. Traditionally, the tea is often shared in a group, with the calabash being passed around with each new infusion – the host drinks the first, often most bitter, infusion as a sign of courtesy. Mate is not only a ritual and ceremonial beverage but can also be enjoyed in a modern and convenient manner, such as in a stainless steel calabash for on-the-go. It's time for Second Flush again! 🍃🫖 It's almost here - the Second Flush harvest is in full swing! When we talk about Darjeeling and tea flown in by air, most of us will probably think of the First Flush, the famous first pickings of the spring tea season. However, we would like to draw your attention to the equally fascinating Second Flush harvest. After a slightly delayed start, the summer pluckings in Darjeeling's tea gardens promise outstanding tea varieties once again this year, especially due to their refined muscatel notes. Just like with the First Flush teas, these summer jewels are packed in small wooden boxes directly at the origin and are flown in as quickly as possible to preserve their freshness and flavour. You'll have to be patient for a little while longer, but our corresponding newsletter will reach you in the coming week and contain all the information and opportunity to reserve your favourite teas with us 🗒️✍️ But, we can however already reveal this much: This year, we are particularly pleased to be able to offer tea from three outstanding tea gardens: Seeyok, Turzum and a new addition - Tumsong.
