I’m thrilled to share that our new article is out in press at JDS Communications! We observed that the uterus of dairy cows that have been exposed to metritis between 7 to 10 DIM has a ‘morphological memory’ to early postpartum uterine disease. Metritis was associated with aberrant uterine morphology (adenomyosis and fibrosis) at 80 to 165 DIM! Move over, pizza and pasta. Oregano—specifically, its essential oil—is finding its way into calf diets. Oregano essential oil has been shown to have antibacterial properties against gram-negative bacteria, especially Escherichia coli. It also has been shown to have antiviral and anticryptosporidial effects in laboratory settings. The bird flu virus hasn’t yet spread from person to person, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week, releasing findings from a months-long probe into a patient in Missouri who was hospitalized with H5N1. A Virginia Tech School of Animal Sciences team tested alfalfa versus orchardgrass in mid-lactation Holsteins to better understand the importance of how the different fibers impact the flow rate through the rumen. “We formulated the ration to hold neutral detergent fiber equal at 30% of the ration,” described Gonzalo Ferreira , associate professor of ruminant nutrition. “Ten percent came from corn silage, 10% was from hay, and 10% was from concentrate,” he explained.
