Protect VIP reaches the 💰BIGGEST💰 financier of San Miguel Corporation to urge them to #StopFundingSanMiguel! 

Environmental lawyer Atty. Avril De Torres from Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED) and Protect VIP questioned Standard Chartered's funding to San Miguel Corporation, one of the largest gas companies destroying the Verde Island Passage, on the bank's Annual General Meeting.

🆕  Dans ses réponses aux questions écrites posées à l’occasion de son #AssembléeGénérale ce matin, BNP Paribas a déclaré “[s’abstenir] de participer aux émissions obligataires conventionnelles du secteur #pétrolier et #gazier”. 

Pourquoi est-ce un pas dans la bonne direction ? Car lorsqu’elles facilitent l’émission d’obligations, les banques permettent aux entreprises de lever des fonds auprès des investisseurs susceptibles d’acheter leurs obligations. Or les #obligations posent problème puisqu’il s’agit d’un mode de financement non-fléché. Autrement dit, il n’y a pas de garantie que le capital levé au travers des obligations ne sera pas investi dans le développement de nouveaux projets pétroliers ou gaziers. ❌ 

➡  L’annonce de cette abstention est d’autant plus importante que BNP Paribas est historiquement très impliquée dans le financement aux majors pétrolières et gazières. Il s’agit d’une première parmi les grandes #banques internationales : BNP Paribas montre ainsi la voie aux autres banques comme Groupe Crédit Agricole, Société Générale, Groupe BPCE, Barclays ou encore HSBC.

✒️ Nous encourageons BNP Paribas à formaliser cette approche en inscrivant cette règle dans sa #politique #climat et à l'étendre aux autres services financiers susceptibles de contribuer à l’expansion pétro-gazière.

Today, BankTrack together with Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED) joined the Climate Choir UK in actions and asking questions at the annual shareholder meeting of Standard Chartered. 

Avril De Torres posed a question about the bank's financing for San Miguel Corp who is destroying the Verde Island Passage in the Philippines and asked when the bank would finally divest.

Henrieke Butijn from BankTrack representing the No to Gas in Mozambique campaign challenged the bank on its financing for Mozambique LNG, a carbon bomb which is destroying livelihoods, fueling a bloody conflict & provides very few benefits.
