Published in Springer Nature Group's Nature Medicine, findings from a small clinical trial suggest that a new cellular immunotherapy approach could be effective in treating metastatic solid tumors. Researchers from The National Institutes of Health, including 2020 American Association for Cancer Research- CRI Lloyd J. Old Award recipient Dr. Steven Rosenberg, genetically engineered lymphocytes from each patient to produce receptors that recognize and attack their cancer cells. The personalized immunotherapy shrank tumors in some patients, and was able to halt tumor regrowth for up to seven months. “It's just the very beginning of converting normal lymphocytes into cells capable of treating the common solid cancers,” says Dr. Rosenberg. “What this study shows is that it's possible.
