The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.

OSPI has partnered with the Department of Defense, the Council of Chief State School Officers , and state education agencies in Kansas and Ohio on a project to improve data sharing with the goal of supporting students who are interested in serving in the military. The organizations are part of a working group called Military Enlistment Access to Student Success (MEDALS). The group is working on standardizing data sharing among states and the Department of Defense to know how many students enter the military, how many students are successful in the military, and what states can do to make students more aware of the military as a career pathway. “Over the last several years, Washington has made incredible gains in recognizing and supporting our students’ diverse postsecondary interests, pathways, and goals,” said State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. “With access to the data showing which of our students enlist in the military after graduation, we will be better positioned to know how our services and supports for students are working."
