This holiday season, Valance Sams, Sr. hopes to finish the most important thank-you note he’s ever written—one he’s been pondering for months. His note is for the family of the 21-year-old man whose heart, liver and kidney are living on in his body, the result of a 20-hour triple transplant he underwent at Cedars-Sinai in May.

“It makes me emotional when I think about how these three organs have changed my life,” Sams said. “I got my miracle. But I feel sad that this young man’s family had to go through what they went through in order for that to happen.”

This week, patients and staff at Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital and Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's were visited by two Los Angeles Rams players: Davis Allen and Zach Evans.

Allen spent time with patients from practically every unit – including the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department. He was joined by his wife, Erin, who kindly handed Rams swag bags to patients while Davis attentively gave them words of optimism and kindness.

Evans made a profound impression on the #CSGuerinChildrens patients and families he met. His interactions brought forth huge smiles, warm conversations and new friendships.

Cedars-Sinai was honored to welcome First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as she took part in a tour of our cutting-edge research labs, delving into the forefront of advancements in healthcare and engaging in enlightening discussions specifically centered around women's health.

During her visit, she reiterated her unwavering commitment to advancing women's health research, serving as a beacon of inspiration that catalyzes innovation and fosters crucial investments.

In an address to staff she noted, “Women's health has been underfunded for decades and many conditions that mostly or only affect women or affect women differently have received limited attention.”

Dr. Biden went on to add that these gaps are even greater for communities that have historically been excluded from research, including women of color and women with disabilities. That’s why last month, we launched the White House Initiative on women's health research to fundamentally change how our nation conducts and funds research on women's health.

The First Lady’s enduring dedication to this cause contributes not only to the well-being of women today but is also leaving an indelible mark on the trajectory of healthcare for generations to come.

“The researchers and the doctors here at Cedars-Sinai, show us what it looks like to invest in women's health to build a medical world that meets the needs of everyone. Earlier, we toured labs where researchers are finding new ways to help women with heart disease.”
