ClearPath is an organization that designs interactive trackers for energy programs in the Energy Act of 2020 and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IJA). ClearPath makes data from government websites more accessible to ensure proper implementation of these programs for economic and emission reduction benefits.

 To advance that mission, we develop cutting-edge policy solutions on clean energy and industrial innovation. An entrepreneurial, strategic nonprofit, ClearPath (501(c)(3)) collaborates with public and private sector stakeholders on innovations in nuclear energy, carbon capture, hydropower, natural gas, geothermal, energy storage, and heavy industry to enable private-sector deployment of critical technologies.

This week, ClearPath brought a delegation of eight Senate staff to Washington state as part of its Clean Energy Innovation Academy (CEIA)!

The delegation visited Energy Northwest’s Generating Station, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Ebb Carbon and PNNL Marine Sciences Laboratory - Sequim Bay, and Helion.

Some of the trip highlights included seeing a nuclear reactor, visiting the soon-to-be-dedicated Energy Storage Launchpad at PNNL, observing how carbon dioxide is removed from water, and viewing a next-gen fusion generator up close.

An all-of-the-above energy approach is needed to meet our energy goals and maintain grid reliability and affordability. It’s critical for American energy independence and meeting growing electricity demand that the U.S. leads in the development and deployment of these innovative technologies.

ClearPath’s Conservative Climate Leadership Program (CCLP) gathered future energy leaders earlier this week at the “Powering Your Energy Career: Connections and Conversations for Young Energy Professionals in Washington.” Highlights included:
- A fireside chat with Stephanie Bice and Ryan Costello; 
- An interactive activity with Luke Bolar working on doubling the energy grid by 2050;
- A workshop on bridging the communications gap between generations in the workplace; and
- A panel discussion moderated by Andrea Steiner with Grant Cummings, Karly Matthews, and Ashley Higgins on their respective energy career paths.

As the need for clean, affordable, reliable energy grows, so does the need for passionate young professionals. CCLP is investing in the careers of our future energy leaders, and the program is set up to provide promising options to fill staffing needs in Congressional offices.

Earlier this year, two new Westinghouse Electric Company AP1000s #nuclear reactors were placed in service in Waynesboro, Georgia at Plant Vogtle, making the facility the single largest clean power plant in the country producing ~5 gigawatts of 24/7 zero carbon power.  This milestone, the first new nuclear reactors build in the United States in more than 30 years, took immense leadership from Southern Company Georgia Power Company, the Georgia Public Service Comm (h/t Tim Echols), bipartisan support in Congress, and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) support across the Obama, Trump, and Biden Administrations. 

This is an accomplishment that should be celebrated.  No doubt there were bumps in the road - IT IS HARD to build first-of-a-kind technologies. But this was a smart investment for Georgia and a smart investment in our country’s technology leadership. 

Frankly, ClearPath has been frustrated with some of the conversation and coverage of the Vogtle story. There is A LOT of comparing apples and oranges. So Jacob Kincer and I tried to put some pen to paper to explain why, even with delays and cost overruns, Georgia ratepayers will be thanking these federal, state, and local leaders for their perseverance for decades. 

This is even more true given new projections on SE electricity demand growth - more than 6.5 gigawatts by the early 2030s.

It was an honor to represent ClearPath's priorities for America's global clean energy leadership at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation's recent public hearing. What's clear: America’s competitors are bringing enormous resources to dominate global energy markets, which requires U.S. trade and development financing to be more agile and strategic.
