Agriculture is facing a social crisis, which threatens food security In the coming weeks, we will highlight emerging macro trends that, without a shadow of a doubt, stress the need to seriously consider shifting to RegenAg. Reason #6: Social Crisis - Young farmers can't get their foot in the door because of very high upfront costs (e.g. land, infrastructure and equipment). Only 11% of farms in the EU are run by people under the age of 40. And 55% of the entire workforce in agriculture is 55 years or older. This ageing crisis threatens food security. - When land changes hands, it is mostly absorbed by neighbouring farms, leading to large industrial-style companies. Consolidated farmland is managed by fewer people using increasingly more intensive practices like monocultures. Among other things this results in shrinking rural communities due to fewer jobs on the farm. - Other barriers for young people include the bad reputation farmers have in society, poor pay (in 2021, the average EU farm salary was € 28,800) and unattractive work conditions (long hours and physical labour). The agri-food sector is already greatly impacted by these macro trends, and regenerative agriculture has repeatedly proven to be a solution to the social challenges this sector is facing.
