International Coffee Partners (ICP) is a pre-competitive partnership of the leading family-owned European coffee companies, Delta Cafés of Portugal, Franck of Croatia,Joh. Johannson of Norway, Lavazza of Italy, Löfbergs of Sweden, Neumann Kaffee Gruppe of Germany, and Tchibo of Germany. 

Our objective is to contribute to achieving a fair and sustainable coffee sector in all coffee-producing countries. Since 2001, ICP has already reached more than 110,000 smallholder families in 13 countries.

Over three impactful days in Bahir Dar City, Ethiopia, women change agents, facilitators, and leaders in the CAFE II project learned vital skills in leadership and facilitation. We are funding the CAFE II project in the Amhara region together with the Austrian Development Agency.
 
Training highlights were:
💭 Self-development, self-awareness, and mastering facilitation techniques.
🌡 Effective facilitation, conflict resolution, and core leadership skills.
🙌 Team building, time management, decision-making, and gender dynamics in leadership.

Participants left with enhanced skills, practical tools, and a network of peers ready to drive positive change in their communities.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬 🌱☕️
Saidi Athumani and Elizabeth Mwazembe, a young couple and farmers from Itaka Ward in the Songwe region, Tanzania, have experienced a remarkable transformation thanks to our project.

Initially relying on unproductive vegetable and tomato farming, they struggled to make ends meet with a coffee field yielding less than 60 kg of parchment coffee annually. Living in a rented house with minimal surplus from their harvests, their situation was challenging. 🥕🍅🏠

In 2019, they joined the Tunaweza Youth Group and participated in agronomy training. These sessions inspired them to improve 100 coffee trees on their farm, increasing their yield to over 300 kg in just three years. This boosted their annual income from 120,000 Tsh in 2020 to 1,380,000 Tsh in 2023. 📈💰

With the additional income, Saidi and Elizabeth built their own house and expanded their coffee plantation. 🏡🌳 Beyond coffee farming, they diversified their income sources. Saidi assists Elizabeth in her tailoring business, having purchased a sewing machine and fabrics. They run a thriving vegetable garden, practice composting and mulching, and invested in a water pump to support their crops. 🌽💧

The ICP project has profoundly impacted their lives, supporting them in transforming their farm and significantly improving their livelihood. Their journey demonstrates the power of agricultural training and innovation in achieving success. 🚀 👏

📅 The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) comes into effect on December 30, 2024. While we generally support its objective to protect forests in coffee-growing regions, we want to point out the significant challenges it entails for smallholder farmers. ☕🌿

📉 Many of them will be unable to provide the required detailed geodata by the deadline. This could exclude them from the EU market - not due to deforestation, but due to a lack of necessary data. This exclusion risks reducing their incomes, increasing their vulnerability to poverty, and impeding their shift towards more sustainable agriculture.

📣 Therefore, we call on the European Union to take into account the interests of smallholder farmers: They require suitable data provision systems, an appropriate transition period, and additional financial resources to comply with the new law. 💻🔄💰

𝟭𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 🌱 In cooperation with NKG Fazendas Brasileiras, ICP distributed young coffee plants to smallholder farmers of the ICP projects in the Campo das Vertentes region, Brazil. 

The plants included the new climate-resilient varieties Paraíso, Acauã, Uva, and Aranãs. Most of the farmers are using these types of varieties for the first time. They were trained in how to plant them and about the benefits they bring in terms of better climate resilience.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦'𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 ⚖💯 The young couple Jali Shupa and Agnes Mwalembe participates in the ICP project in Songwe region, Tanzania. 

They attended trainings on gender equality, household economy, and income diversification and eventually became an example of success for their community. 🔝 

Together, Agnes and Jali expanded their family's sources of income by investing in livestock, such as goats and cows 🐐🐄 and entering the retail sector by strategically buying and selling avocados and fish. 🥑🐟💰 

Agnes notes: “Previously, I thought cattle and goats were for men, and household chores were for women, but now I realize that everything is for both of us.”

Jali says: "Our partnership is not just about sharing tasks; it's about sharing dreams. The ICP project has not only transformed our farm but also strengthened our bond as a family. Together, we've proven that traditional roles can evolve, and our community is witnessing positive change."

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐀𝐅𝐄 𝐈𝐈 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 💡☕ Since 2019, ICP has been active in Ethiopia’s Amhara region to support the local smallholder coffee farming families to improve their livelihoods. The project CAFE II (Coffee Alliances for Ethiopia) is a cooperation between ICP, the Austrian Development Agency, and the implementing partner Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung - HRNS.

Here are some examples of what the 2,500 farming families who participated in CAFE II achieved since then: 💯

💰 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐘𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝: Farmers' coffee yield increased by 70 % in three years through the application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).
🌽 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: The proportion of families growing fruits or vegetables for home consumption on their farms increased from 77 to 90 %. 
🤝 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The share of farmers who are members of a cooperative increased from 40 % to 50 % during the project.
🌦 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: 90 % of the farming families didn't suffer any or only little climate-related crop losses.
⚖ 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: The percentage of households reporting that the husband and wife make joint decisions increased from 61 % to 87 % during the project.

keep supporting the participants of our projects in:

🌱 implementing regenerative agriculture and agroforestry.

To accomplish this, all seven ICP shareholders committed to this new 5-year strategy: Delta Cafés, Franck , Joh. Johannson Kaffe, Lavazza Group, Löfbergs, Neumann Kaffee Gruppe (NKG), Tchibo. Furthermore, we are cooperating with Sida and Austrian Development Agency as public partners and The J.M. Smucker Co. as a private partner in addition to various local organizations and institutions in the project countries. 🙏

🍌☕ 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 🌱 This sustainable farming system is gaining traction among Ugandan farmers. 🔝 Here's why: 

🍌 With banana's rapid growth, farmers start reaping rewards before coffee matures.
🔄 Diversification lowers farming risks compared to relying solely on one crop.
🏠 Bananas improve the food security for the whole family.
📈 The double use of the farm area leads to higher yields in both bananas and coffee.
☔️ Banana shade shields coffee from harsh weather, reducing stress.
🌱 Banana residues enrich the soil, enhancing root development and potassium availability.
🛡️ Bananas minimize soil loss, protecting the land from erosion.
☕ All this also leads to better coffee quality in the long run.

There are however some challenges to consider too: 
⚠️ Both crops might compete for water, nutrients, and sunlight. The bananas need to be managed well to not become too dense between the coffee trees.
⚠️ Managing two crops demands more time and effort.

Despite the challenges, the benefits of banana-coffee intercropping far outweigh the drawbacks, offering a sustainable, profitable, and eco-friendly farming solution for Ugandan farmers.

Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were recently held in São Francisco de Paula as part the ICP project! 🚀 Here's a quick rundown of the key highlights:

Two engaging FGD sessions took place, bringing together 5 producers from Retiro, Cascalho, Água Sumida, Lagoinha, and Coelhos communities in the first session. The second session included 5 producers and 2 representatives from Lagoinha, Coelhos, Borges, and São Francisco de Paula.
 
The momentum continued with the third FGD session, exclusively for women, featuring 5 dynamic participants from Machados, Cerrado, São Sebastião da Estrela, and Represa communities.
 
The fourth FGD session turned the spotlight on the perspectives of young people, with 3 enthusiastic participants from Santo Antônio do Amparo and Serra do Peão in Perdões.
 
👥 Participants:
 
• Producers from diverse communities and municipalities across the Campo das Vertentes region, collaborating with field technicians of Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung - HRNS.
• Dedicated HRNS collaborators facilitated the sessions, ensuring a conducive environment for insightful discussions.
 
ℹ️ The goal of these FGDs was to gather qualitative insights, fostering interactive conversation circles to enrich our understanding and guide the next steps of the ICP project.

💲 They bulk with cooperatives and earn a relatively higher income due to better prices. 
🤝 They have better access to market information including prices and negotiate with buyers.  
🌱 They apply good agronomic practices and successfully manage their coffee. 
👩🏫 They train other farmers in coffee production and climate-smart practices. 
☝ They have taken up leadership positions in farmer organizations and act as change agents and role models. 

There is still a long way to go to achieve full equality but these women prove that impressive strides are possible! 🚀
