Today is World School Milk Day, a day which celebrates the benefits and success of school milk programmes across the world. The first World School Milk Day was celebrated in September 2000 and has since become an annual event promoted by the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations). In the UK, our history of school milk spans back over 100 years to the Provision of Meals Act 1906. This recognised that the provision of school food would allow needy and undernourished children to gain more benefit from education. It also recognised how milk was an excellent food that could be easily provided to children, to help prevent poor nutrition. After the Great Depression and the World Wars, malnutrition among children was a great concern, and the development of school milk schemes around the world was a response to this. Dairy products provide young children with an array of valuable nutrients, from calcium, high quality protein, B vitamins, potassium, zinc, phosphorus and vitamin A – which help ensure they get a healthy and balanced diet. It is for this reason international nutritional guidelines commonly recommend regular consumption of dairy products as an important source of key nutrients for all age groups.
