🏳️⚧️ Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the lives and memories of the transgender individuals whose lives were cut short as a result of anti-transgender violence and systemic modalities of oppression, and we continue to fight for trans rights and trans justice. Join us today, Wednesday, November 20th, from 3:30-5pm at 555 Broome Street to honor and celebrate loved ones we've lost—including community activists like Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson, Infernational Chrysis, and Cecilia Gentili—and to honor, validate, and affirm our trans community. A big Friday shoutout of gratitude to NYS Assembly Member Chantel Jackson , who recently awarded The Door a $25,000 grant to support expanded food and nutrition services at The Door's Bronx Youth Center. We had the pleasure of having AM Jackson visit us last week at our South Bronx facility in her district. She toured the beautiful space and talked with our staff about the range of expanded services now being offered at BYC, including food, arts, legal help, and a 24-hour drop-in center where youth members can access basic needs services, shelter support, benefits navigation, financial counseling. We also discussed the dual mental health crisis—the skyrocketing need for youth mental health services, along with a shortage of NYC providers to meet that demand—as well The Door’s recent initiatives to build systemic solutions that address these crises: expanded mental health offerings and a new, innovative pilot program for Door staff, in partnership with NYU Silver School of Social Work , that will make acquiring a Master’s of Social Work degree more accessible.
