Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) is a chapter-based organization with more than 1,750 members, and 3,000 alumni based throughout North America. As technically-minded students and professionals, ESW works on forging lasting solutions to sustainability challenges through technical design projects and educational initiatives. Through a combination of chapter-based service learning projects, education on sustainability principles and design techniques, training on leadership and sustainable engineering skills, and a national community, ESW is helping to create the next generation of technical leaders for a more sustainable world. Abstract:

This session explores how cross-sector collaboration in Ithaca, NY has provided the foundation for effective climate action, accelerated the transition to a new energy economy, and led to a more resilient community. In particular, it focuses on the Tompkins County Climate Protection Initiative, the Ithaca 2030 District, and the Ithaca Green New Deal, examining the ways in which each of these efforts has contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, establishing mutually beneficial private-public partnerships, and promoting equity in the community.

More about Peter:

Peter Bardaglio is Coordinator of the Tompkins County Climate Protection Initiative and Executive Director of the Ithaca 2030 District, one of 24 such districts in the U.S. and Canada. He served as a history professor, dean, and provost for 24 years combined at Goucher College and Ithaca College before shifting his focus to the climate movement in 2007. Besides his scholarly writings on race and gender in U.S. history, he is co-author of Boldly Sustainable: Hope and Opportunity for Higher Education in the Age of Climate Change (2009) and has published numerous articles on climate change and sustainability. He currently serves on the boards of New Roots Charter School in Ithaca and the Groundswell Center for Local Food and Farming, and is trustee emeritus at the Paleontological Research Institution/Museum of the Earth.

Abstract:

The world is reeling from wildfires, record heat, and flooding, and we are falling behind in the race to limit global warming. The imperative to swiftly curtail present greenhouse gas emissions and forestall future releases has never been more pressing. But how do we do that? What are the solutions that need to be deployed to achieve that goal?

In the seminar, Yusuf will discuss a science-based solution portfolio across sectors, timeframes, and geographies that when deployed and scaled quickly and effectively can cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030s, help us reach net-zero emissions by 2050s and avert disastrous climate change.
