Congratulations to Dr. Laurie Kirstein , a surgical oncologist from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center , who will begin a two-year term as the new chair of the ACS Commission on Cancer (CoC). “To expand the reach of the CoC, we can create pathways for programs in areas of the country that are not yet CoC accredited. Many of these programs lie in rural America but are also in traditionally underserved urban centers. Helping these programs establish standards for cancer patients will improve outcomes for their communities,” Dr. Kirstein said. An estimated 10,000 lives could be saved each year with quicker access to blood in the field for injured patients. In a panel at Clinical Congress, surgeons emphasized the need to eliminate "blood deserts," where this access is limited. “We have an opportunity to save thousands of lives a year with a single intervention, prehospital blood. Uniform access of blood can have a major impact on outcomes for our trauma patients,” said Jeffrey D. Kerby, MD, PhD , chair of the ACS Committee on Trauma, who moderated the panel.
