Investors called to transform Big Oil amid Trump’s pro-fossil fuel agenda With Trump in the White House driving a pro-fossil fuel agenda, the climate crisis intensifies. The Paris Climate Agreement stands on shaky ground, and the fight against climate change grows ever more precarious. Trump promises to expand oil, gas, and coal production, rolling back regulations and targeting renewable initiatives. His stance on climate change, seen as a “hoax,” weakens global efforts like the Paris Agreement, jeopardizing climate goals. Throughout his campaign, Trump pledged to roll back climate regulations; dismantle the Inflation Reduction Act, a cornerstone of recent environmental policy; and prioritize the fossil fuel industry, making clear his limited enthusiasm for renewable energy sources, which he views with some skepticism, reserving interest primarily for nuclear power. Institutional investors are now seen as the final safeguard against climate change, especially given Trump’s pro-fossil fuel stance and his plan to fire SEC chair Gary Gensler, which could reduce corporate climate accountability. Investors, particularly those in Big Oil, face a duty to protect the economy from climate risks like extreme weather, which threatens billions in pension funds. Shell lowers investments in clean energy to 8%, endangering the company's future PRESS RELEASE Shell’s investments in the division Renewables & Energy Solutions (RES) are down to 8% of the oil major’s overall capital expenditure, the oil major’s third quarter results reveal. The backtrack in investments in clean energy comes after Shell scrapped emissions reduction targets in March. At least 92% of investments remain tied to fossil fuels. “By continuing to bet on fossil fuel expansion, the board of Shell jeopardizes the future of the company,” says Mark van Baal, founder of activist shareholder group Follow This. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts global oil and gas demand to peak before 2030. This projection clashes with the expansion plans of major oil companies like Shell, BP, and Exxon, raising concerns about stranded assets and diminished shareholder value.According to the IEA's 2024 World Energy Outlook, fossil fuel demand will decline after its peak in all scenarios. Despite this, some oil majors are betting on the failure of climate policies, pushing for increased fossil fuel consumption against market trends. This disconnect between IEA projections and oil major investments is deeply concerning. It threatens our ability to meet climate goals and poses a financial risk to shareholders. The recent devastation caused by hurricane Milton is a stark reminder of the escalating costs of climate change Early estimates place the financial damage from the hurricane higher than the combined profits of seven oil giants – Shell, BP, Total, ENI, Exxon, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips – who collectively earned $32 billion in the second quarter. President Biden has stated that hurricane Milton has inflicted $50 billion in damages. Scientific evidence strongly suggests that climate change is making hurricanes like Milton more intense and destructive. The devastation caused by Milton highlights a critical issue: the companies that profit most from fossil fuels are also major contributors to the climate crisis, and the costs of that crisis are outpacing their gains. A new report on the state of the global climate reveals a deeply concerning acceleration of the climate crisis. Key climate indicators, from greenhouse gas levels to ice loss, have reached record levels this year in what researchers call a “critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis” The report highlights the continued heavy reliance on fossil fuels as a major driver of the climate crisis. Even though renewable energy use is increasing, the consumption of coal and oil reached record highs in 2024. BP abandons its target to reduce oil and gas production by 2030 In a significant shift from its previously stated commitment to climate action, BP has reversed course, abandoning its target to reduce oil and gas production by 2030. This decision directly contradicts the company's prior collaboration with shareholder activist group Follow This on climate resolutions. It's hard to believe that in 2020, BP was actively working together with Follow This on a climate resolution, demonstrating a commitment to the energy transition they've now abandoned. BP’s refocus on fossil fuels is a direct result of the decrease in shareholder pressure to invest in clean energy. Big Oil can make or break the Paris Climate Agreement. The end of coal in the UK shows that a fast transition to clean energy is possible On Monday, the last coal-fired powerplant in the UK was shut down. Coal power made up 80% of the UK’s electricity in the early 1980s, and 40% in 2012, before petering out in the last decade due to costly carbon taxes and the rise of cheaper renewables. This landmark demonstrates that fossil fuels can be replaced with clean energy. If renewables continue to increase at the same exponential rate, gas and oil will be replaced by clean energy as well, first in electricity generation and later in other energy sources.
