FSD Africa is a specialist development agency funded by the UK’s Department for International Development working to make finance work for Africa’s future.

FSD Africa sees itself as a catalyst for change, working with partners to build financial markets that are robust, efficient and, above all, inclusive. It uses funding, research and technical expertise to identify market failures and strengthen the capacity of its partners to improve access to financial services and drive economic growth.

FSD Africa is also a regional platform. It fosters collaboration, best practice transfer, economies of scale and coherence between development agencies, donors, financial institutions, practitioners and government entities with a role in financial market development in sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, FSD Africa provides strategic and operational support to the FSD Network.

FSD Africa believes strong and responsive financial markets will be central to Africa’s emerging growth story and the prosperity of its people.

#ICYMI: With support from FSD Africa and in collaboration with Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) Zambia, we successfully held the the 5th #APSACONF2024 on 25th to 26th July, 2024 in Livingstone, #Zambia, where we had active engagement and participation from key stakeholders across the pension sector in #Africa and globally. 

On Thursday, 25th, we delved into:

➡️ Understanding the current landscape of pension systems in Africa – examining the diverse reform paths of African pension systems.

➡️ The transformative impact of technology on pension supervision – delving into the how digital advancements are enhancing pension supervision efficiency, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

➡️ #ESG considerations in pension investing – addressing the impact of #ClimateChange on pension investments, emphasising long-term resilience through sustainable investing practices.

➡️ Extending coverage to the informal sector – strategising ways to extend pension coverage to underserved populations, including informal sector workers, women and rural communities. #FinancialInclusion

It was an exceptional honour to host senior government officials, regulators, policy makers and thought leaders across the pensions sector during the 5th #APSACONF2024 that took place in Livingstone, #Zambia 🇿🇲 on 25-26 July 2024, in collaboration with Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA), Zambia.

Under the theme 'Chronicling Africa's pension Journey towards a Dignified Retirement,' the event served as a platform to highlight the progress made in pension reforms across #Africa and showcase success stories and case studies from various African countries. The conference addressed critical issues facing pension systems in Africa such as inadequate benefits, sustainability issues and poor coverage, and explored innovative strategies to address these challenges. 

Moving forward, the Africa Pension Supervisors Association aims to promote technological solutions for pension administration and management and encourage the exchange of ideas and experiences to shape the future of pensions in Africa.

Last Wednesday, Lendable, in partnership with #FSDAi, hosted a workshop in Nairobi bringing together diverse businesses to address a critical challenge: understanding and measuring greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions.

The event kicked off with a panel discussion moderated by Lendable's Associate Director of Impact, Lienda Kavindele (PRINCE2® Registered Practitioner). Joining her were Alphonce Mwangi and Judith Nekesa, investment and risk experts from #FSDAi, who shared their views on the growing importance of emissions measurement, the evolving regulatory landscape, the expectations from investors and the role of GHG data in investment decisions.

Following the panel, climate specialist Silvia Binet from Steward Redqueen provided hands-on training on calculating and reporting #GHG emissions under Scope1, 2 and 3. Participants learned to identify key emission sources, collect accurate data, and determine the carbon footprint of their organisations.

Key takeaways from the workshop emphasised the importance of focusing on material emissions, maintaining consistent measurement practices, and leveraging available tools to streamline the measurement process.

The Africa Pension Supervisors Association was established in September 2019 as a membership association that brings together pension regulators and supervisors from across #Africa to canvass issues of common interest. 

Last week, in collaboration with the Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) of #Zambia, we held a successful two-day conference in Livingstone, Zambia. Under the theme, "Chronicling Africa’s Pension Journey Towards a Dignified Retirement," the gathering provided a platform to review progress in ensuring secure and dignified retirements for all workers across the continent.

#APSACONF2024 HIGHLIGHT: The 5th Africa Pension Supervisors Association Conference comes at a challenging time in #Africa, foreign direct investments have collapsed, ODA has been declining and many countries in Africa are facing high level of debt and #ClimateChange challenges.
