FSD Kenya, Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and other stakeholders are currently undertaking the 7th Financial Access Household Survey dubbed 2024 FinAccess Household Survey.

The objective of the survey is to measure and understand the financial needs of Kenyans, their use of financial services and products, and determine ways in which financial services can be improved to meet their needs. 

Data collection will run from July to November 2024 in all the 47 counties.

Recognising the critical role of MSMEs and digital finance, Safaricom PLC and FSD Kenya partnered to explore these interactions through research that was conducted by Ipsos. 

The study segments Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) based on owner demographics and business characteristics to better understand and address their unique needs. 

By categorising MSMEs based on owner demographics and business characteristics, market players can design targeted interventions and support systems, enhancing business growth and financial inclusion. 

Five segments are identified in the study: established, developing, high potential, maturing, and emerging. Each segment has distinct features, motivations, and challenges. 

Understanding these segments allows for tailored financial products, business solutions, and support mechanisms to empower MSMEs at various growth stages.

Exciting findings from the collaborative research project, "Enhancing SACCOs for Rural Remittance Users in Kenya," undertaken by FSD Kenya and Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA). The presentation highlights the significant potential of SACCOs to accelerate remittance inflows to rural and underserved populations, offering flexible savings, investment, and loan options tailored to the financially excluded. 

To fully leverage remittance potential, SACCOs must address regulatory gaps, including foreign exchange handling, legal entity requirements, and participation in the National Payment System (NPS). The SACCO Central initiative presents a strategic opportunity to tackle these challenges and enhance SACCO participation in the broader financial sector. 

Beyond cash-in and cash-out services, SACCOs can offer a range of remittance-linked services, including diaspora investment solutions, diaspora accounts, retirement benefits, health insurance premiums, and direct utility payments. This comprehensive approach enhances financial access and contributes to rural development.

He pointed to initiatives like the sandbox, established by the Capital Markets Authority- Kenya in collaboration with FSD Kenya and CGAP. This mechanism enables small innovators to test their ideas in a controlled environment, paving the way for eventual market deployment.

Additionally, Gwer proposed that regulators create an enabling and predictable regulatory framework to foster collaboration and innovation while safeguarding consumers and the financial system.

The evolving finance and technology sectors underscore the necessity of collaboration to drive innovation and ensure sustainability. The session at the Kenya Blockchain and Crypto Conference highlighted potential synergies between traditional financial institutions, emerging fintech companies, and regulatory bodies.

Clear and predictable regulations are vital for fostering innovation while safeguarding consumers and the financial system. Initiatives like the fund box, established by the Capital Markets Authority, FSD Kenya, and CGAP, exemplify how regulators can create environments conducive to innovation.
